We accuse the Iranians of provoking us, and they respond with shrieking outrage. That’s how one can tell we’re telling the truth and they’re lying. Only true accusations result in such passionate cries of anger from the other side.
This reminds me of an incident from back in eighth grade. We all know that teenagers love to hurl insults at each other, and one of the most common insults is ‘retard.’ One day, a kid called a classmate named Ivan a retard.
Now, the word ‘retard’ had been directed at other students in the class in the past, but the teacher had done nothing further than to tell the insulter to be quiet. But this was different. You see, Ivan was...kind of slow. Quite slow.
As soon as the word ‘retard’ was directed at Ivan, the teacher flew into a screaming rage. He jumped up and, with his face turning red and contorted into a grimace of anger, yelled at the insulter to report to the assistant principal’s office immediately.
As the kid walked out and the teacher’s face slowly returned to normal, I looked at the girl next to me and we both nodded our heads. Everyone in the room knew the truth. It was pretty sad, really.
I don’t think the US Navy has much experience in multicult reality interpretation. This happens in strong engineering/science organizations.

Since no explosion was triggered, folks, it may well be this was no more than Jihadi’s intent on dying for a photo op, willing to goade us into action and then taking the PR. If Iran lied about this, they could have just as easily lied that we blew up innocent fishermen for no reason.
