Yep. My kid is 17 and bought his with his own dough. I can still dispose of it until he's 18, though.

Re: buying your own car...

When I was 15 I bought a 1955 Chevy from the original owner (this was summer 1986).

I had already been working on my grandfather's tobacco farm for years and bought it for $1400 with some of the money I'd saved.
My parents DID pay for me to have it repainted, though.

I still have the car. :)

I’ll say! I had my own car, bought (and insured) with my own money at 19. Before that I drove the family’s Dodge Caravan, and pretty much just to college and work.
