The article says that he had perforated ulcers. At that point, antibiotics don’t do much good; you risk bleeding to death without successful surgery (increasingly, in the US, of the laproscopic variety). Of course, that still begs the question of why the ulcers weren’t properly diagnosed, and treated with antibiotics, before they became perforated.

Precisely. I can’t remember the last time I saw a perforated ulcer admitted. It has easily been 10 years. With the advent of Proton Pump Inhibitors and treatment for Helicobacter, we don’t see Peptic Ulcer disease like we did back in the 70’s.

Hmmm.....surgery for ulcers.
Didn't Fidel have some serious problems with his surgery too?
Perhaps Agee's benefactor is gone and the junta is cleaning house.
