Last year, my daughter passed through Britain on her way home from Italy, and found EVERYTHING to be ridiculously overpriced.

Exactly, I have been in Britain many times and it is extremely expensive, Italy is not cheap either, in fact all of EU is much more expensive then here in the US. Thank God we live in America.
