Arizona Senator John McCain, fresh from his victory in New Hampshire, has taken a narrow three-point lead over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in the South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 27% and Huckabee at 24%.
Thats a significant change since last Sunday. Just before the New Hampshire vote, Huckabee was leading McCain 28% to 21%. In mid-December, Huckabee and Romney were tied for the lead with 23% of the vote while McCain was well off the pace at 12%.

The full data:
Mike Huckabee 24%
John McCain 27%
Mitt Romney 16%
Fred Thompson 12%
Rudy Giuliani 6%
Ron Paul 5%
Some other candidate 2%
But this is why Thompson needs to go to the convention. If there is a brokered convention, Thompson will be the best compromise candidate, united both social and economic conservatives. But Thompson needs to do much better than 12% to even be considered.
Giuliani and Paul fighting it out for last AGAIN??? Wow.
“But Thompson needs to do much better than 12% to even be considered.”
Agreed...if Thompson can’t even show in the south, he’s done.
he is our best choice for a 'consensus conservative'--
that can UNITE the Party and RALLY the base--
BOTH of which will be required to keep Slick Hillie out of the White House!!
The convention won’t look at Thompson due to favorability ratings when he is tied with McCain on favorability unless Thompson has more delegates.
Fred and Jeri were on Fox this morning! They were great! When Fred was asked about Huckabee being ahead of him in the polls in SC, Fred said Well, I think those polls are kinda like the polls in New Hampshire showing an Obama win over Hillary. He was great as usual! Just donated another $50 to the red truck and looking forward to tonights debate on FOX at 9:00PM Eastern! The REAL CONSERVATIVE will shine through again! GO FRED!
I just gave money to Fred’s campaign and I live in SC.
What is *really* ticking me off is that he’s on a SC bus tour. I’d *like* to go see him when he comes close, but (as of now) their is no schedule of appearances on the bus tour link on his site!
WTF? C’mon Fred. If you want my support, at least tell me when and where I can come give it in person. Sheesh.
Leaders like Trent Lott and Lindsey Graham and Larry Craig (and W) got us to where we are and put the momentum in the system for things to continue along these lines.
It is amazing that a large number of ‘true’ conservatives are voting for anything but candidates with complete conservative record. Even if the more moderate candidates were winning with a strong second by conservative candidates, I would understand, but even in a very southern state, we have two very middle of the road candidates and the more right leaning guys WAY behind in single digits.. They are social conservatives, so they pass that test, I guess.
“But Thompson needs to do much better than 12% to even be considered”
Exactly. Like you, I am for a brokered convention. But if Thompson can’t break double digits in a number of states, it would be electoral suicide to consider him.

if mccain wins south carolina, a southern state, he will be formidable to win the nomination.
Neither McCain nor Huckabee can win in November.
You referring to the Huckster? ;-)
I had hope for SC. I feel like I’m living in the Twilight Zone.
Fred at 12%.
Because the only two men who have vowed to do just that, are in the lead.
