WASHINGTON — Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver's licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials.

The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials.

Now, DHS plans a key deadline in 2011, and then further measures to be enacted three years later,

Regardless your views on this, it is amazing it will take gov't 10 years to start implementing this law enacted in response to 9/11/01.

That's why it starts at DOB 1964.

We old f*rts would just tell them to pound sand.

HSD is a joke. That post 1964 DOB just shows that the Dept. has no regard whatever for security....merely an ability to pay lip service. The timeline is a total joke. Maybe HSD should just stick to handing out millions of our tax dollars in grants to communities so they (the communities) can buy more SWAT and HazMat equipment that they do not need and cannot support!

REAL ID is dead, this is just another smoke and mirrors show of relevancy for the Federal bureaucracy, for the “security issue” politicians it pacifies the proper voter demographics, for the state level politicians and bureaucrats it provides another reason to delay implementation until the national mood shifts and this plan is truly scrapped.

Bush administration did as little as necessary to maintain appearances, and nothing more.

The same government that can't get something as simple as a driver's license right was pretending to be able to deal with 20 to 30 million illegal alien invaders. That same government can't even get passports right for the minority of citizens that apply for them. The same government that wants to run a big socialist health care service. It's time to rein in the clowns. Think carefully when you go to the voting booth in November.

How many of the individuals excluded on the pre-1964 basis will ultimately be excluded from having to get a Real ID because of death.

Could you explain what this means?

I suspect the motivation for the 1964 time point is to defer dealing with the baby boom that occurred before that point in time. Assuming death rates for a given age are fairly steady, their will be an increase in absolute numbers of people dying that corresponds to the "boom" in births.

the tattoo part is about right. because they failed to protect the borders, or the gates, they treat us like cattle.~ go figure.

remember, 75 employees in the CIA knew two of the al Qaeda hijackers (for sure) were here operating in the U.S. as early as 1998 (during the Clinton administration) and did nothing and said nothing about it. (read the CIA inspector general report released in the fall of 2007) the CIA fought tooth and nail against its release. Bush signed the order to release the report.

Why not just guard the border and the gates?

Because that's too easy and logical.

At minimum, it will be inconvenient and expensive features... after all - us taxpayers will take it in the shorts again for a “security” feature that can be bypassed by a few dishonest DMV workers - and probably by counterfeit license makers in a few years....

I would imagine some form of bio-info recorded on the magnetic strip for one.

Who knows what else....??? But from what I have been hearing from some privacy groups - it could get “interesting”. Of course, the head of Homeland Security said that travelers and those entering Federal Buildings will be glad to give up a little privacy and convenience for the “increased safety”.

Where does it stop? I personally think there should be a moratorium on ANY laws and regulations that are supposedly for homeland security until the #1 threat is taken care of - the borders. I am sick of the supposed war on terror with wide-open borders and 25 million illegal immigrants (and who knows how many are Islamists...???).

I really am starting to feel like we are trying to become the pre-WWII Germany - Fascists in control - and Marxists receiving boatloads of votes in the Democrat primaries (and unless the idiots in the Republican party pull out a surprise and put out a candidate that the grass-roots of the party can support) that will likely be the next POTUS....

I am praying like I never have for this country and my children....
