[Knowing Chertoff, I'm sure they've worked out a system that will let them keep track of citizens and their activities, while giving dead people and illegal aliens the right to vote or work without having to pay taxes.]
Well, why give up my card-carrying liberty if not for some greater purpose? This whole thing stinks. If Chertoff wants a Federal ID he should just say so. And cite the benefits and downsides of the program.
I'm not so happy ;that my fall-back position is carrying a PASSPORT in my own country.

They have been, somewhat. After 9/11, they really pushed for some sort of national ID (Bush, etc.) even though the hijackers entered the country legally (or at least using the proper documents that would get them through a REAL ID check). The thing is though, a lot of this was being planned under Clinton.
It's ridiculous, this would not have stopped 9/11 (funny how when the government screws up, they make us pay for their mistakes).
I don't like the REAL ID at all. I've already gotten enough notices and worries from the friggin Veteran's Administration losing my data, the REAL ID creates a situation where 5 or 10 years down the road, somebody can get a ton of data on many many Americans.
