I have had run-ins with a group of new evangelicals. In listening to their public and private discussions of doctrinal issues, it was clear that they did not consider Catholics to be Christian,

Same old mantra some of ya'll here insist on eh?

50 year old southern baptist here....fundamentalist-literalist-almost charismatic...

yet no one i know of here thinks Catholics are not Christian...never heard that in my life.

we think you guys should listen more to your Pope on some issues like abortion for instance and we were never big on liberation theology, your views of Mary, the need for clergy as conduit to the Lord, confession, you guys a guilt laden/we are shame laden...etc

but never have I had a preacher say ya'll were not Christian....never.

As for Mormons....I think are different...almost post-Christian Christian....like Sufis to Islam or Noachide to Judaism....hard to tell....it's their business.

Jehovah Witness...wow....they are strange birds....hard to say...

Unitarians....nope.

many protestants.....apostate nowadays sadly....good works salvation/faith neglectors....who often dismiss the old covenant when it suits them.

I don't think this Pope is apostate at all....he seems to stick to his creed even if it's a bit grating to we Prods....but a lot of Catholics are milquetoast I seen....they just go thru the motions. Not the ones here mind you. I wish more were devout...the West would be far better off culturally...they used to be a cornerstone and dependable.

You may not like Fundamentalists...which are different from Evangelicals......but Fundamentalists are hardly ever lapsed...by their very nature they are true believers.

this is not directed at you but the hostility directed at and the ignorance of Fundamentalist/Evangelical/Charismatic Christianity on this a right wing forum....is appalling and a sad testament to our times. I cannot imagine Dwight Eisenhower having to apologize or explain being a Christian in order to run for national office. It's nuts.

Then you’ve never heard a good preacher! Catholics not being Christians has been taught by every protestant denomination, but especially the Baptists since the 1500’s. Oh yeah, this all stopped with the influx of liberalism into the mainline denominations at the end of the 1800’s. You’ve never heard this?

yet no one i know of here thinks Catholics are not Christian...never heard that in my life.

On the map...do you see that little "island" County for Romney? That's my home county...predominantly Catholic. As an aside, Thompson won the "rural farm" vote quite handily.

Back to the point, I was raised Baptist, and taught that Catholics were all going to Hell...period. Imagine, I heard that from the pulpit, and had to "square" that world view with my daily interaction with 80% of my classmates...and most of my friends.

We were taught that we had to "save" them.

Finally, when I was a teenager, we got a decent pastor. He brought the local Catholic Priest down to our Youth Group to explain Catholicism, and its similarities to many of the Baptist teachings.

I had already figured that out well before then (Grandma on Mom's side was a Methodist lay-minister...and did her best to keep my head straight).

That line of thought is routine in many Fundamentalist Churches...why you would say that it is not, is beyond me.

I married a conservative Catholic (always been a defiant sort).

And, again to the point of this article....there really is no point. Most rural Catholics in Iowa are Democrats. Go figure...they love Tom Harkin!
