The New York Times Politics Blog ^ | 01/11/2007 | John M. Broder

LANSING, Mich. – Mitt Romney, in what may prove an unfortunate choice of words, has taken to referring to Michigan as "ground zero" ..

<snip>

.. many – including not a few in the Romney campaign – also believe this state could be the ground zero where his 2008 presidential hopes are reduced to rubble.

Anyone up for discussing the dynamics of Romney quitting the race?

My mom and Dad are buried here and soon I will be too.

Michigan, Romney’s fire wall, South Carolina, Huckabee and Thompson have fire walls, and in Florida Giuliani has erected a wishing wall.

Romney should resign, and send his money and voters to
a real conservative. It would give him some dignity.

Does Hillary Clinton have a "wailing wall"?

I am all for him quitting and endorsing Thompson. Also on Wed. he was caught on tape saying to his fundraisers, "Hit the phones today make all the promises you have to, and…make sure that we get the funds that we need to keep on propelling this campaign forward with power and energy..

what has Romney done to get everyones goat? Do any of you think that he may be our best chance besides Fred for the nomination? He may not be perfect but no one is. Just because you don’t agree with every position he stands on he is much better than Mccain or Huckeberry. Think about it for awhile!

Drive-Bys Push McCain, Huckabee; Aim to Disqualify Fred, Mitt, Rudy

RUSH: Let me just tell you what’s happening. It is absurd and you’re going to have to really gut it up here because the Drive-By Media is doing everything it can to disqualify the true conservatives on the Republican side. They’re saying, “Romney, he can’t win. If he loses Michigan, he’s done.” They said that about Romney in Iowa, they said that about Romney in New Hampshire. Now Fred Thompson apparently scored. Did you watch it last night, Mr. Snerdley? Fred Thompson was just fabulous, and people said, “Where has this been? All of this time, where’s this been?” And I can’t answer that, but now the Drive-Bys are saying, “Well, yeah, he was pretty good last night, but it’s too late.” We’ve had two states! It’s too late for Fred Thompson? And, of course, “Rudy, why, he’s lost all of his momentum, Rudy’s out of it.”
So if you listen to the Drive-Bys, and these people that got it all wrong in New Hampshire, what we’re being told is that the only two candidates left that have any chance whatsoever are McCain and Huckabee, which is exactly what the Drive-Bys want. They want a liberal, moderate nominee, and even a liberal, moderate vice presidential nominee because they know, or they think, that whoever the Democrat nominee is can smoke — they don’t want a conservative nominee on the Republican side. Obviously. The Drive-Bys will always tell you, folks, who is a conservative and who isn’t by virtue of who they try to destroy and by virtue of who they try to prop up. And right now they’re trying to prop up McCain, trying to prop up Huckabee. Last night, Thompson went after Huckabee big time, which is cool. He’s gotta go after McCain, too. Now, I’ve been told that Thompson and McCain are good friends and that Thompson is a little bit reluctant to go after McCain. I think one of the reasons here is everybody hates Romney, apparently. A lot of these Republicans just despise Romney. They’re trying to take him out so that they can move on to others.

I actually agree, or I should say, Mitt agrees with most of my ideas.

But, I don’t trust him. So, it doesn’t matter.

I like about half of McCain. I trust about 80% of McCain. Unfortunately, a lot of what I trust McCain on, I don’t like.
But I trust him.

Mitt is a one term guy, of which he was mostly liberal, which he has been his whole life, as his father before him. Now he says he is a conservative. Please. It’s insulting.

Why should Romney quit when he is winning the race? Is that the only hope your candidate has?

Republicans:

Popular Vote:

Romney 103768 30%
McCain 102362 29%
Huckabee 66876 19%
Paul 29648 9%
Giuliani 24151 7%
Thompson 18716 5%
Hunter 1721 0.4%
others 1007 0.3%
Delegates:

Romney 21
Huckabee 14
McCain 12
Thompson 8
Paul 4
Hunter 1
Giuliani 1
Finishes:

Romney: 1 win, 2 places
Huckabee: 1 win, 1 show
McCain: 1 win
Thompson: 1 place, 1 show
Hunter: 1 show

what has Romney done to get everyones goat?

Mitt, to me, really looks like someone who will say whatever he has to to get elected. If he really was caught saying "make all the promises you have to" to his supporters, it would only strengthen my distrust. I don't know if he really said that, I'd love to see a link. But right now it wouldn't surprise me.

Mitt is talking very conservative now that he is running in the primaries. I just see him "moving to the left" if he were to make it to the general...after all, this is the strategy "du jour" preached by the MSM. The dem nominee is "supposed" to move right once (s)he secures the dem nomination and the GOP nominee is "supposed" to move left. I think many conservatives are sick of "softening views" and would stay home if this were to occur. I've been unable to shake the suspicion that Mitt would follow this strategy, and Fred would not, but would run on the merits of conservatism and federalism.

To me, the latest "Fred doesn't want it" mantra coming from opponents is a distortion of the fact that Sen. Thompson is unwilling to sacrifice conservative principles, make empty promises, or pander for the Presidency. My impression of Gov. Romney is just the opposite.

This is only my opinion. I can respect the fact that we may disagree.

who else has the economic background that he has? NOBODY!!!! Does McCain? Huckeberry? Who would have a grasp of the financial markets and how they work? How about the sub-prime crisis? Would Clinton or Obama know about these without depending on the economic advisors?

you would be willing to vote Mccain with his baggage of the Keating5? I’m sure with clinton machine would dig up more dirt on him. So far nothing on Mitt or I guess Fred for all that matters. all I know is I would be satisified with either one.
