Iran: AIDS rate doubles in the holy city of Qom

Tehran, 11 Jan. (AKI) - In the past year, the incidence of AIDS has doubled in the holy Shia city of Qom, second only to the Iraqi city of Najaf in religious significance.

"The great share of the newly infected have contracted the HIV virus, not through using infected syringes, but through unprotected sexual relations," said Amir, Akbari, director of the city's health centre.

In the past year the number of those affected by AIDS in Qom has risen from 177 to 324.

Forty per cent of those infected are students from the theological colleges in Qom. In Iran, according to official estimates, there are more than 16,000 infected with AIDS in the country, while non-government organisations put the total number above 100,000.

"In Iran, we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

The defunct Soviet Union used to say the same thing.

"In Iran, we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

What a laugh! In the Middle East, Persians are considered the most effeminate, dominated by their wives, & most likely to be gays. Not something that's known in the West, I think.

Qom has a population of a little over a million, for an AIDS rate of roughly 0.3 per 1,000.

New York City has a rate of around 12 per 1000.

If they want to catch us, they have a ways to sink yet.

Young students are probably buggered by their instructors. If only one instructor is infected, he is infect many students. The the students graduate, and some number become instructors themselves and repeat the process. After a couple of "generations", all the faculty would be infected

Qom has had a reputation as a place where prostitution, under the guise of temporary marriage, is common. In light of Iran's current economic difficulties or because they have run away from home, many women in Qom are involved in the sex trade and the city's theological students are among their best customers. Temporary marriage is permissible for Shia Muslims. It can be for one hour or as long as 99 years. It's well documented for years that this goes on in Qom and other theological centers.

Yes, they claim every city is holy. The “second” most holy city is in Iraq per the article, not Saudi Arabia where the other first and second most holy cities are. The article’s author is insulting one sect of Islam by making the other sect’s most holy cities less holy.

When does anyone write about Jerusalem or Vatican City in the same breathless way?

“We don’t have homosexuals like in your country.”

This is true. In our country, the homos are out of the closet and shoving their perversion in everyone’s faces. In Islamic countries, homos are common, but still in the closet.
