Thanks, it helps me that somebody put there resonates with 'it'. There is more.

Movies like should have been developed way much more, 2 1/2 hours long with more character development IMHO. You need to see the movie to remember where that part came from, very dark.

I know the movie well.My grandfather took me to go see it when it came out.I was five years old.Really made an impression on me as I got older.I first got to fly one of those 17s back in 1991.Now I am rebuilding one of those B-17s with a bunch of guys and we will all be old men when it flys again.

I have never been up on an old B-17. And with my knowledge of metallurgy esp as to aluminum alloys I would not go up in in any aircraft that age for recreation purpose.

Howvwer I really like your project. What truly astounds me is how Boeing enginnering (et al) did with what they had.

I mean look at the B-17 E-F models, they all had only 4 each 1200hp engines and could range from England to Germany and back with all that payload.

First off the B-17 is so overbuilt.Which is the reason for its longevity. The metals used at that time have held up really well. The stuff today is super strong but has time X all over it.We are now making new extrusions because the old ones are starting to get some fiz(corrision). There are currently two B-17 projects that will be “new” aircraft when completed. The reason the Bombers could make the round trip was the addition of tokyo tanks in the outboard wing panels.I trust these planes more than I do current airliners.

I have seen the internals of those warbirds, and from that I see that we have different concepts of overbuilt.

To me, the B-17 was not overbuilt, it was built as designed for a life of (approx 25 missions). How thick were the skins, less than 0.020”?

You want to see overbuilt? :-) Then someday crawl thru the wings and bowels of a disrobed DC-8. What will ground the DC-8 though is the old 7075-T6 alloys and how they were made. Inter-granular corrosions causes them to ‘go poof’ (turn to powder) at some point

The only skin on a 17 that is .020 is the nose back to frame three right forward of the cockpit. They were not designed to survive 25 missions but were expected to last 50 hours.Remember Boeing built it so it was built tough.None of the jets will be flying as long as a B-17.The oldest is 65 years and flying and the youngest is 63 years iold. I was thinking jets used 7075 T7351 because of the resistance to corrosion that T-7 offered.

What about B-52’s. (the ones made by Boeing-not the ones with big hair)
