Writers' Strike Chills Hollywood, (Golden Globes’ Collapse, Dick Clark Fights NBC, Jay's Garage )

With the Golden Globes’ collapse, writers have struck a $75-million blow in their labour dispute, and the Oscars might well be the next casualty. The scribes aren’t celebrating, though, because no one expects this to end soon

HOLLYWOOD – As symbols go, there probably isn't a more accurate one for the current crisis in show biz.

It's a picture of Oscars host Jon Stewart with his fingers crossed, sheepishly hoping all is well, that adorns the new visitor's brochure of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The brochure was likely printed before the Writers' Guild of America (WGA), now in its third month of a strike by 12,000 members, had vowed to picket and possibly spoil the 80th Academy Awards on Feb. 24.

Which means that the Academy is as good at foreseeing impending trouble as it is handing out shiny gold statues. But not even the Amazing Kreskin could predict what's going to happen here next.

The town built on dreams and illusions is feeling a cold blast of reality brought on by the escalating WGA action and related fandangos, but chills sink in slowly in the land of the palm trees and purse-sized pooches.

There are still street banners all over town trumpeting tonight's presentation of the Golden Globes, even though the Globes have effectively been cancelled and replaced by a glitter-free press conference reciting the names of the winners.

Me too-

I also suspect that there are thousands of writers out there who would love to have their jobs.

Exactly - its not just the writers and studios that suffer.

“Hollyood” is essentially a blue collar, middleclass industry.

YouTube: “Reality” is so off the chart now, you can’t make these things up and give it justification. It’s like a joke told poorly, and in conclusion one has to add: “ you had to be there “.

...or NannyCamera on YouTube exposes it all, no boundaries. Clinton makes fun of fairy tales, but over-exposure leaves nothing to be learned or desired.

It's like the fried egg vs brain on the Anti-drugs commercial. This strike depicts imagination influenced by a drug called the union (WGA).

I haven’t even noticed anyone was on strike. They still play sports, do the news, have specials on Discovery and National Geographic. Overall, I miss nothing the writers are involved with.

I live in Hollywood, CA so I can give my 2c...

From what I know (I have WGA/SAG member neighbors), it’s a splintered group right now. The strike captain 9who’s also a neighbor of mine) is having a hard time scheduling these pampered fools to go on protesting.

Look, MOST of these writers would prefer to be at Starbucks/Coffee Bean on Sunset RATHER than wave a sign 10 hrs a day in the cold. Case in point, the 1st week of the strike, they were in full force on Gower (a long avenue where small prodn co’s operate). The 2nd week, they were gone.

The WGA members who make the most money (e.g Shawn Ryan of the Shield & The Unit) are also Producers who make money. So there’s a conflict on cash flow.

There’s a saying in the industry: you want the glory? be an actor. You want the money? Be a producer.

So right now, the writer-producers are the ones receiving the LARGE royalty checks, and you will not catch them at the picket line..because they dont care. The ones pushing for the strike are the militant WGA board members who dont earn squat so they push for this action.

So if these foold want to stretch this for a year, the better. From a buddy of mine who wroks at Devt for Disney, they’ve got scripts up to their eyeballs anyways.

Fox has American Idol reappearing soon, and that has been the ultimate television show (in terms of ratings) for some seasons now enabling Murdock to get the most out of his competitive advantage while others are left with their reality shows and reruns.

However, nothing is always lost with reruns, as a bigger audience can emerge that was never there before; thus better ratings when they do return for their new season. If one of these effected shows can't make it in reruns, then probably wasn't meant to be.

The audience always adjusts their habits. Just reading a good book " helps kill the pain" (back of hand to brow) of it all. ;)

A) American pop culture is — for better or worse — envied, imitated and admired around the world.

B) Movies are no longer a product made just for Americans. Many, many films earn more on foreign rights than in the U.S.

Keep up the fight! America is benefiting buy this lull in excellent educational programing Hollywood has been providing to our youngsters and adolescents. Lets extend this fight for at least another few years so we can reprogram our children and teach them right from wrong again.
