Michigan Romney Backer Switches to Huckabee
Human Events ^ | 1/14/2008 | John Gizzi

As most polls of likely primary voters in Michigan now show a near-tie between Republicans Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and John McCain, the Romney camp got a jolt Saturday as a key backer announced he was switching his support to Huckabee.

With three days to go before the primary, State Rep. Fulton J. Sheen of Allegan County, introduced Huckabee at the Amway Grand Hotel and announced he was changing to the former Arkansas governor from native Michigander Romney. In an exclusive interview the evening before his announcement, stalwart conservative Sheen -- namesake-nephew of the legendary Roman Catholic bishop in the 1940’s and ‘50’s -- said that Romney’s attacks on Huckabee’s Fair Tax proposal convinced him to switch to the Arkansas man.

“I have my own version of the Fair Tax [essentially a consumption tax] that is about 90-95% of what Gov. Huckabee is proposing,” said Sheen, who follows former House Appropriations Committee Chairman Scott Hummel into the Huckabee camp, “I decided I could no longer support a candidate who was saying something I strongly favored at the Michigan level wouldn’t work.”

Stalwart conservative Sheen, who initially got into politics as a volunteer for Jack Kemp’s campaign for President in 1988, said that he has “not met Mike Huckabee personally” but has watched his speeches and performance in debates. Although he did not reach Romney to tell him of his decision, Sheen said, “I did tell Craig DeRoche, the speaker of the House here and a major Romney supporter, that I was going over to Huckabee.”

I do like the idea of replacing the income tax with a sales tax—but not unless and until the 16th Amendment is repealed.

The Huxster also has money problems.............
...’Although Mike Huckabee is first in the polls for the Jan. 19 South Carolina Republican primary, the latest Federal Election Commission (FEC) figures show him not even among the top four Republican presidential candidates for fund-raising in South Carolina.

Rudy Giuliani leads the South Carolina Republican money game, followed by Sen. John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

Huckabee is also not among the top four Republican presidential candidate fund-raisers in two other impending primary states: Michigan (Jan. 15) and Florida (Jan. 29). FEC numbers put Romney in the money lead in Michigan and Giuliani ahead in Florida’.....

So Romney's Michigan campaign consists of:

Telling Michiganders that all their long gone jobs are magically coming back (blatant lie), and

Attacking the Fair Tax.

Maybe Mitt doesn't think the Fair Tax would give him enough money to pay for socialist health care. The RomneyCare program he created in Massachusetts is already running a big deficit.

At the same time is OK—so long as there's no way that a Federal sales tax might be imposed along with a Federal income tax. In other words, the law imposing the sales tax would have to state that it is null and void if there is also an income tax.

The only reason anybody pays attention to Michigan is because they have an “open primary” where Democrats can vote for Republicans and vice versa. I find it totally strange that a political party would allow that.

Huck stands for nannyism

Romney says the federal government can bring all of Michigan's lost jobs back. "Where has Washington been?" Mitt asked.

Who's the nanny-stater now?

Thanks for posting. The only reason Michigan will vote for Romney is because is father was a governor there..an empty reason to vote for anyone.

And don’t forget, Romney shows us pics of Michigan (in his TV ads) that all look suspiciously like Detroit or Lansing. I’m pretty sure he lived here....way to disenfranchise 80% of the state!

(oh, and we don’t need him to tell us we’re a “one-state recession”, we’re in the middle of being “blown away!”

>>”Huck stands for nannyism

Quite true. And on Face the Nation, Huckabee explained that while he would emphasize the use of existing job-training programs, etc., he did not pander by offering new programs targeted at Michigan (and Michigan voters.) Instead, he emphasized the security implications of keeping manufacturing jobs alive and the boost to productivity that his Fair Tax would bring about.

Given all the “nanny-stater” accusations in here, I’ve listened closely to Huckabee’s explanations and he sticks to his message, rather than pandering to particular groups by changing his message (unlike Romney and even McCain.)

Just out of curiousity, has You-Tube got Huckabee documented as pandering to the ethanol crowd during the Iowa primary race? If I’m correct in my assessment of Huckabee, he’s philosophically conservative and would not do so just to win votes. And no thinking conservative can be in favor of the ethanol boondoggle. We’ll be lucky to afford to eat if current trends keep up. So what did Bush and the Dems do? Increase the boondoggle in the latest energy bill. Pathetic. Again, did Huckabee give in to the ethanol crowd or not? Just curious.

I am 100% for the Fair Tax, however that is still not enough to pull me into supporting Huckabee. What good is a change in tax policy by someone who is so much for the expansion of the federal government into further intrusions of private property thru nanny policies.

All of Romney’s support in MI is in and around the Detroit area. In the rest of the state he has very little support.

In the western part of the state where the Republicans dominate, McCain, Obama, and Huck have raised far more money.

We’ll know tomorrow but I still say Romney will be lucky if he can hold third place. If he gets 2nd I’ll be very surprised. He is NOT going to win here!

The 16th has to be replaced with another stating that a direct tax on income is specifically prohibited. This would apply to the states and D.C., as well.

That is NOT the only reason. The main reason is because Mitt Romney is a fantastic businessman. Michiganders see him as someone who actually knows what he's doing fiscally, they're not sure about the rest of the lot. We're a state in the financial pits, more McCain's tax-hike-a-rama doesn't look very good to us.

Currently, I'm a Thompson supporter, but I'm looking seriously at Romney due to his financial acumen.
