Yesterday Hillary Clinton told Tim Russert on Meet the Press that she was 14 years old when she heard Dr. King speak in person.
She turned 14 in October of 1961.
But on March 4, 2007, at the 42nd Anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, Mrs. Clinton recounted how as a young girl she had the great privilege of hearing Dr. Martin Luther King speak in Chicago: The year was 1963, Clinton said in her speech. My youth minister from our church took a few of us down on a cold January night to hear someone that we had read about, we had watched on television, we had seen with our own eyes from a distance, this phenomenon known as Dr. King".
So when was it? Was Hillary at Kings speech on that cold night in January 1963, or the spring of 1962. Was it 1965 or the fall of 1961?
Perhaps more importantly, how is it that Pulitzer prize-winning journalists such as Bernstein and Van Natta, Jr manage to get such simple biographical details wrong? Don't they do basic historical research when they write biography? And did Senator Clinton herself not remember the date correctly when she spoke at Selma?
I asked another journalist, Michael Dobbs at washingtonpost.coms FactChecker, to help out with the answers to these questions.
PING!!
I’m sure Hillary must have been there, right alongside Mitt Romney when he watched his Mexican-born father George Romney march alongside Dr. King...
Sorry, no dice.
Is this the same Youth Minister that took her to go pick vegetables with the Illegal Alien population of Cook County?
I was at this meeting and Bill was in the back of the bus...
Time to check out this youth minister and see where he was. Anyone know a name or is he anonymous??
Next thing you know she will turn up on a morning talk show wearing a blood stained blouse.
Hillary can throw it with the best of them....BS
and more. Bill didn’t have to teach her...they
both have an innate persona that ignores anything
that is not agreeable with their agenda. Have these
two ever had a shrink, with credibility, give an honest
assessment of their penchant for ..plain old lying..
with a straight face?? Jennifer Flowers was told to
deny,deny,etc....the Clinton M-O...goes on..with the
MSM and their protectors....Carville, 4-Head Begala,etc.
Will it ever end? JK
"For a couple of years starting when Clinton was 13, Jones tutored her and about 60 other teenagers every Sunday and Thursday night on e.e. cummings and T.S. Eliot, Dostoyevsky and Bob Dylan. He called his lessons "the University of Life.""
Now I know close to nothing about T.S., Dostoyevsky, and e.e. (whats up with the lower case, e?), but dont tell me that in 1960, a 13 year-old Hillary was tutored on Bob Dylan, whose first album wasnt released until March of 1962. Never mind that it sold only 2500 copies. Either the fact- checkers at The Globe were off the week that piece ran, or the Rev. Jones was moonlighting as Dylans agent years before the singer signed with Columbia records.
The very same. He is the same youth minister who later in 1963 took Hillary Clinton with him when he was delivering hot meals to HIV patients.
And I'm sure they were all there with Bill Clinton when churches with Black congregations burned in his home state.
Perhaps she actually heard Sir Edmund Hillary in black face.
There's no way she would have the time.
She was too busy babysitting the children of migrant farmworkers...in Park Ridge, Illinois.
It underscores a horrible type of cynicism. The type that believes that all people lie, that those who can do it best ‘win’, and that it’s OK for them to lie because they are special and are lying in the best interest of the rest of us who are not as enlightened as them.
Wow. This guy Jones sounds really cool!. He blows into town in a red chevy convertible, white bucks, guitar, and knows about Bob Dylan two years before he cut his first record.
This is the man that mentored Hillary, maybe the next President? More info, please.
So heres WaPos Jenkins on this dude:
Jones arranged discussions with disadvantaged children in Chicago and took his youth group to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak at Orchestra Hall on a Sunday night in 1962. King's address was "Sleeping Through the Revolution," and in his vibrato he decried suburbanites who passed the poor by. Jones introduced the children to King personally, and Hillary was so affected that she volunteered to babysit for the children of migrant workers during harvest.
So Jenkins got it right. But not only did the Rev. Jones take Hillary to see King on that Sunday night in 1962, Jones introduced the children to King personally!
Could it be? The man mentored Hillary, knew of Bob Dylan before he became famous, and introduced Hillary to Martin Luther King personally in Chicago in 1962. And on top of all that, he actually got Hillary to volunteer to babysit for the children of migrant workers. This man is close to a saint. He should be running for President.
You didn’t know that Hillary Rodham Gump was present at every Liberal watershed event of the ‘60’s?
Shame on you.
That same Youth Minister just last week told Hillary that the reason the Iraqi government is reconcilling is that they heard the democrats are going to win in the fall...
So what if Hillary saw MLK Jr. I am sure Edwards channels MLK Jr to dead black children killed by greedy corporations that dumped poison into the drinking water used by minority communities.
That's how he would sign his name in his autographed books. He personally didn't insist on lowercase - as a professor he went by E.E. Cummings.
Dylan wasn't nationally famous until 1963's Carnegie Hall Concert - which, oddly, was on Hillary Clinton's 16th birthday.
Until late 1961 he was just a kid playing open mic nights (excuse me, "hootenannies") at NYC coffee houses.
Until that reputation-making concert he was known nationally more as the young guy who wrote "Blowin' In The Wind" for Peter, Paul And Mary and not yet as mythopoetic genius he would become known as.
