SIX people are thought to have been killed after Taliban militants attacked the hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, which houses the Australian embassy. The Taliban claims four militants with rifles and grenades attacked the Kabul Serena Hotel in the early evening.

One militant exploded a suicide vest in the hotel's car park, while others stormed the hotel, with guests rushed to the cellar as gunfire was exchanged.

Popular with international guests and diplomats, the Serena also houses the Australian Ambassador.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it has confirmed the safety of all its embassy staff in the area, and is now contacting other Australian nationals to confirm their safety and advise them to avoid the hotel.

A Freudian slip of the mind... I first read the report as mutants, not militants... Call them terrorists, or call them virgin-seekers, but don't call them militants. Saying they are "militants" gives them a "good" name.
