“If you are supporting Governor Huckabee as a ‘conservative’ then I doubt you have any real idea of what a conservative actually is.”

I’m pretty sure I have some idea:

Some would sell their soul to be close to a king....Looks like he might be poll reading and not a real conservative...

How do you go from supporting Fred Thompson to Huckabee? I don’t get it.

Expediency, thy name is John Stemberger?

Most of us are strong conservatives.

Then a. you have a unique definition of strong or conservative, or b. you are letting something else override your conservative principles (oooooh, he's a Christian).

If anyone had the choice between an atheist brain surgeon who was outstanding in his field and a so-so brain surgeon who was a Christian and chose the Christian for his brain surgery because he was a Christian, then that person is a fool. Not a fool for Christ, just a fool.

That might have been a premature judgment. Both on whether or not Thompson would hit his stride, and on Huckabee’s electability. I for one think that when the Dems start slamming Huck for everything the SBC stands for (and I say this as a Southern Baptist) that they will not only demonize him in the eyes of the uninformed electorate, and also cause religious devisivness the likes of which we haven’t seen in a century.

It won’t necessarily be Huckabee’s fault, but it will be ugly.

That makes more sense. He is jumping from the one that appeared ahead early to the one ahead now

Fred was never ahead. I think it's more likely that he talked to Fred and Fred agreed to let him switch. My prediction that Fred is dropping out and endoreing McCain after SC to help him in FL.

Helped bring down President Nixon. What a great conservative Republican!

If Nixon was guilty of doing illegal things, then any true conservative would say that he should be held accountable. Those who would say that, well, we can let him off because he's one of us or because not letting him off would be bad for our cause wouldn't be conservative at all, merely another form of the relativist liberal given over to expediency.

Or maybe this guy figures that Huckabee will bring the right kind of voters to the polls to pass his marriage amendment in Florida so he sells out the national priority for the local one.

“That relationship may not have been as cozy with Stemberger in the Thompson camp and Dobson, et al, in the Huckabee camp...”

I’m pretty sure Dr. Dobson has yet to join anyone’s camp, although he has ruled out Giuliani, Senator McCain and Senator Thompson.

“fought against Dr. Adrian Rogers’ attempts to reform the SBC”

Not doubting you at all but if you have a source that elaborates further on that I would find it fascinating and useful.

“NRTL’s endorsement of Thompson was actually very revealing, because Huckabee, who had been courting them, immediately exposed his nasty side when he turned around and starting insulting them as unimportant instead.”

There’s nothing inherently nasty about pointing out that the NRLC has discredited and marginalized itself.

Senator Thompson’s weakness on the right to life is about much more than federalism. Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, he’s said consistently since 1994 that he wouldn’t support state laws to prohibit abortion. During his 1994 campaign he said, “I’m not willing to support laws that prohibit early-term abortions.” He told Project Vote Smart, “Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy.” He explicitly refused to support laws prohibiting abortions for convenience:

In 1996 he signed a document saying, “I do not believe abortion should be criminalized.” He still personally opposes laws to prohibit abortion:

Here’s a quote from that November 7 conversation with Tim Russert:

“When I saw—and again, ALL CONSISTENT WITH WHAT I’VE SAID [emphasis mine]. I—people ask me hypothetically, you know, OK, it goes back to the states. Somebody comes up with a bill, and they say we’re going to outlaw this, that or the other. And my response was I do not think it is a wise thing to criminalize young girls and perhaps their parents as aiders and abettors or perhaps their family physician... I do not think that you can have a, a, a law that would be effective and that would be the right thing to do ...”

And he won’t dare back Romney for obvious reasons.

By default, it’s Huckabee...however, given he hasn’t gone public with an endorsement, I am optimistic that he will, at last, come around on Thompson.

Contrary to most Freepers, I am generally impressed with Dobson’s judgement, and i do not think he is too proud to approach Thompson and mend the rift he caused with his hasty judgement when it becomes clear that Fred is the only one who can win in the Fall AND represent the things Dobson believes in.

I read your post, and I wish you well in South Dakota. But I have to say that you must be hopelessly suckered by Mike Huckabee. You seem like you would be more at home with Ron Paul.

Let me guess, you are one of those who believes that national Right to Life no longer wants to end abortion so they can keep fundraisng to make themselves rich, right?

Man, I wish I was amazed, but I am rapidly becoming less and less so...
