“when the two men tried to board the ship”
You board a ship, you are not a hostage, you are a pirate.
I’d have thrown them over the side not tie to a mast. They got lucky.

They have no right to board another vessel. Their actions makes them pirates, hang them from the yardarm!

The two crew members of the Sea Shepherd protest ship, Steve Irwin, Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane were tied to the radar mast of Japanese harpoon vessel Yushin Maru after the pair tried to hand over a petition calling for an end to whaling. Don't F with Ahab-san.
To: Cecily
The pair boarded the ship after the Japanese crew failed to respond to radio contact from the Steve Irwin. Well all righty then, that makes piracy OK then.
But hang them from the yardarm anyway.

There’s three kinds of people in this world: Those who can count, and those who can’t.

Funny thing is that the Sea Shepard does fly the Skull and Cross bones, so it’s clear that the Japanese believed that they were beiing attacked by pirates and have the right to defend themselves against pirates.

So, did the Steve Irwin crew fancy themselves an arm of the Royal Australian Navy? If so, are they prepared to send forces to Iraq if called?

They’re lucky they weren’t harpooned. Or keelhauled. Or something.
I wonder if Terri and Bindi know that there’s a bunch of smelly anti-whaling eco-hippie types floating around in a ship named after their husband and father?

Last voyage, one of these ships has a “mysterious” engine fire. Was it caused by one of these violent peaceniks that boarded undetected, who knows, but in an environment where their craziness can kill people, I wouldn’t “be nice” to the little bastards.

These guys were taken prisoner, not taken hostage.
Unless they are being threatened unless their ship leaves the area or for some other reason.
Language is used so loosely in the MSM.

It would appear the pirates were thwarted in their attempt to board and capture the whaler.
Pirates seem to do better when armed with cutlasses than petitions.
