In a World of Peril, Let's Keep B-2 Bomber (Duncan Hunter Archives, 1995)
NY Times ^ | 8/4/1995 | Duncan Hunter

Posted on 01/15/2008 5:18:48 PM PST by pissant

Your Aug. 2 editorial alleges that the B-2 Stealth bomber is a "billion-dollar lemon." This broadside is reminiscent of the 1980's, when critics sought to undermine the Reagan rearmament program by questioning the idea that a high-technology military could perform in combat.

Before World War II, bomber advocates thought air defense was futile -- until radar was invented. Suddenly, bombers could be detected and engaged. The United States lost 2,200 aircraft over North Vietnam as missiles were added to anti-aircraft guns and fighters. From this experience came the push for "stealth" technology that would blind radar.

Only seven B-2 bombers have been delivered to the Air Force. While some flaws have been discovered in the manufacturing process, they are being corrected and do not compromise the aircraft's design or mission.

The B-2's radar cannot "distinguish a rain cloud from a mountainside," you charge. If rain is heavy enough, it will reflect like a solid object. This is true of all radar. A more powerful radar can "see" better but could also be detected by an enemy. The rain-rejecting software has been adjusted. There is no indication this problem will degrade performance.

Tests will continue through spring 1997. The Air Force has confirmed that detectability and survivability testing has been "successful in confirming expected B-2 performance."

The man was a classic. The time congress demanded a public apology from Traf because he called his colleagues a bunch of prostitutes. Trafficant called a press conference and apologized to prostitutes everywhere for the comparison.

ROFL. If only he had kept his nose clean.

Being a party line democrat would have saved him. Ask Robert Toricelli.

Right and although he was too heavily connected to the Unions his ideas on trade turned out to be prophetic. At the time I was young, stupid and one of these “free trade no matter how stupid the deal” types. :) Congratulations on casting a vote of uncompromising principle and integrity. When this mess shakes out I can promise none of us will regret having done so.

I’m starting to think that democrats crossed party lines to vote uncommitted in the GOP race.

LOL! Maybe we can get him released by spreading rumors his hair is a protected nesting site for the Spotted Owl or something. Once ManBearPig gets his eco-warriors on the case it’s a done deal.

the B-2 Stealth bomber is a "billion-dollar lemon."

Like the proverbial stopped clock, even the NY Slimes gets one right every now and then.

He should be out in another year or so. Seems like he got some 13% in the last primary he ran in while in prison. LOL

The Duncan Hunter Theme song (Sung to the old TV Show ‘Underdog’)

There’s no need to fear! Hunterdog is here!

Duh-DUH dump, doo-doo-Dump… Duh-DUH dump, doo-doo-Dump

Ooooh… BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm…
WAAH, ah-ah-AH-ahhh…

When liberals in this world appear,
to change the ways that we hold dear,
and spite the word of God made clear,
For cry’ in’ out loud who’s in charge here?
Get Hunterdog! HUNTERDOG! Huntedog! HUNTERDOG!

He’s for fighting Gore, Obama
smiting Clinton, Paul, Osama
Hunterdog. Oooh… ahh-AH-AH, AAH: Hunterdog!

Ooooh BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm… BOW-oohm…
WAAH, ah-ah-AH-ahhh…

When ‘cross our lines illegals speed,
Where globalists so filled with greed,
Will plot to change our nation’s creed,
To right this wrong we need the lead
of Huntererdog! HUNTERDOG! Hunterdog! HUNTERDOG!

He’s for fighting Gore, Obama
smiting Clinton, Paul, Osama
Hunterdog. Oooh-ah-Ah-AH-AH, Hunterdog… HUNTERDOG!

Yup. Voting out. It’s sad though. Nowadays, traitors get book deals and interviews on Oprah. Not what they really deserve.

A mission capable rate that hovers near 40%, 80 MMH/FH mostly to repair the RAM for a bomber that can’t fight its way to or from a target and can be detected by low band search radar, thus necessitating that it be escorted by EA-6Bs to jam said low band radars and all for the bargain price of $1 billion a copy proves that you are indeed full of feces, gomer.

“Just once I’m afraid. Pesky honesty gets me every time.”

You just named 2 reasons that you would be a failure as a DemocRAT.

I am glad you are a conservative.

Yep, when you go from ordering 130 to 20, the price tag per unit does that, slick.

And they just shot them right out of the Iraq and Yugoslav sky, if I recall. Guess those Russians don’t make very good air defenses, slick

The AF hates them too:

The combat effectiveness of the B-2 was proved in Operation Allied Force, where it was responsible for destroying 33 percent of all Serbian targets in the first eight weeks, by flying nonstop to Kosovo from its home base in Missouri and back. In support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the B-2 flew one of its longest missions to date from Whiteman to Afghanistan and back. The B-2 completed its first-ever combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying 22 sorties from a forward operating location as well as 27 sorties from Whiteman AFB and releasing more than 1.5 million pounds of munitions. The B-2’s proven combat performance led to declaration of full operational capability in December 2003.
