Peace is what happens when when the cost of war is too much compared to the status quo.

Peace is the absence of war. Those dissuaded by war are motivated to other means. Dissuasion is the reason for peace.

“Understanding” never caused peace, unless everyone understood the consequences of war. When the consequences of war are to great, peace is the result. WW III did not happen (as expected) as a result of mutual destruction, not because anyone “understood” other’s principles and ambitions.

Our species is not all evolving at the same rate. “Understanding” at many levels is useless. We are to understand that all Americans are Infidels and that if a Muslim kills one, they get 72 virgins for eternity when they die? What are they to understand? How would you help them understand the flaws in their logic? Where does “understanding” and “peace talks” get us when there is no place to even start on common ground?

Some day, say in a thousand or two more years, maybe we can re-define peace. Maybe evolution and technology will help re-define how conflicts are resolved. Maybe the human race will have “understanding” and tolerance. For now, we feeble humans have to define peace as the absence of war or deadly conflict.

IMO

peace is not the absense of conflict. Peace occurs when the people live in freedom, with control of their own destinies and hope of a life everlasting.
