I can read Scripture.
I will be waiting for proof of this.
You can begin with Genesis chapters 1 and 2.
I’m not aware of any Christian churches that teach that any animal has equal value with any human, but I do know there are animal blessing ceremonies, and St. Francis certainly had a lot to say about the treatment of animals. I think it is going to depend on which church, and who interprets the Bible.
You mean besides a clear cut racially and politically charged prosecutor run amok? Or the near universal knee jerk knee-jerk reaction to the racial implications of the case — wealthy, privileged white boys attacking a poor pathetic black woman? Or was it when the university moved far too precipitously, firing the lacrosse coach, suspending the season and taking action against the boys without so much as a hearing much less due process?
Dr. E., the Bible also tells us to be good stewards. That wouldn’t include torturing animals.
"Nothing"? I assure you, the Bible exists. I even have a copy in my briefcase.
The zoo was at fault, doesn’t matter what went on that day. I’m surmising that they have had a bunch of Brownies running things and not listening to the animal handlers.
No, it doesn't, because Johnson said what he said for all of us to clearly read and understand. And he didn't say "animal." He said "someone."
He also said this...
"A cow is a very good animal in the field; but we turn her out of a garden." -- Samuel Johnson
Get the difference?
Gee.
TIGER THREAD HIJACK IN PROGRESS.
Absolutely. Animals of mine have been blessed at such rites.
and St. Francis certainly had a lot to say about the treatment of animals.
He had less to say about animals than most people think, but he certainly did not believe that animals were equal with men or that they had immortal souls.
I think it is going to depend on which church, and who interprets the Bible.
There is no plausible interpretation of the Bible which would yield the notion that animals are of equal value to people.
No Christian sect I am aware of, no matter how radical, has taught this.
I was NOT talking about equality, but about humane treatment of the creatures God left in our care. You might be confusing me with other posters who talk of equality. I have not said they are equal.
Thank you. I misinterpreted your earlier remarks.
Excellent post Designer. Well said. And thankfully, since I do not live in Rio Linda, I know exactly what “reticent” means. ;>)
“God and Scripture tell us animals were put on this earth to serve man, not to be his equal.”
And women, don’t forget. Animals and women, in that order.
That's because, as you rightly stated, there is none.
It's a pagan belief redeveloped through the theosophy of the 19th century, eventually dawning into the full-blown insanity of 20th century new-age wizardry.
Maybe the whole thread should be moved to “religion” since now it’s almost entirely a debate about religious beliefs.
Wow!!!! Who would’ve thought by joining Free Republic I would meet the “ALL KNOWING”
Allow me to repost your comment:

An average reader of this comment would take your meaning to be that while you are not aware of any church teaching such equality, it really depends on which church and who interprets the Bible.
Hence my answer to you addressed this issue of equality which you discussed in your post.
Everyone can agree that animals should be treated humanely. None of us considers Michael Vick a pastor.
The debate centers around one poster's bizarre contention that God sees gnats and human beings as the same.
I think tyhey did much more than taunt the tiger, I think they *abused* it. Why else keep silent? If they had just taunted the tiget, there’d be no reason to refuse to ralk to the police?
And this debate should be in the religious forum.
Sounds reasonable. The very first reports out implied an animal handler might have purposely aided the tiger's pursuit of the offending young men.
We sure haven't heard much of that angle any more.
And with the looser Geragos at the helm, we probably never will again.
