The paper required for those paper ballots could be recycled from the last elections ballots. Incumbants would be very appreciative if the ink remained also.

A flash drive can be palmed and could contain perhaps a complete election on a stick.

Well, if you want everyone to know who you voted for, then yes, just give your stub away. It would be alot easier to just tell them though.
The system would be purely optional for the voter to participate in. You don`t want to check, dont take the stub off the ballot.
And as for people buying the stubs , or Union thugs pressuring people to bring them in, that sounds like a crime already on the books, or easily could be. How about making it a felony with a mandatory minimum sentence.... lets say 10-15 years in a federal prison.
But in all honesty, do you ever think this little idea of mine would happen?
Human counters have a motive to cheat. Computers have no care to favor one side over the other.
There is no “write protection” when the chip has no capability to be changed. The chip would be hardwired to the board.
As it is now, these chips in most every device can be updated with firmware changes by diskette, email, etc. There is no reason it has to be that way.
There are CD-Rs that employ write-once technology just as there are non-eraseable ROMs. And the parts are cheaper.
All other manners of vote HAVE been tampered with in the past. It is foolish to believe that they are “safe”.
If the machine has no non-volatile storage other than the two cartridges which are locked in it, and if many eyes are watching closely when those cartridges are installed and again when the machine is opened, what exactly is one going to do with the flash drive?
Robbery is illegal, ergo there is no need for people to have guns to protect themselves against robbers.
I suggest it DOES matter. That position is rather condescending.
In anything other than the smallest elections, it is not possible for any single voter to monitor the process completely. What is necessary and sufficient is that the voter know that people he trusts are monitoring everything.
Some people only trust others who are technologically illiterate. That's unfortunate, but that's the fault of those people and their 'leaders'. I see no reason to appease 'leaders' who want to keep their people in the dark.
I'm not suggesting that there needs to be one miraculous person who is trusted by everybody. Merely that there are enough technologically-capable people from all political backgrounds that any reasonable person should know of at least one such person he can trust. Unless some particular political background is fundamentally opposed to any sort of modern technology, there shouldn't be any problem. If there is some political ideology that isn't held by any technologically-capable person, that would suggest to me that there is something wrong with it.
Figuratively speaking of course in reference to the stik. Any electronic scheme can be cracked. Wholesale changes to contents can be done instantaneously.
Over history I know of no instance where paper ballots have never been cracked en-mass. In cases where it has been attempted it is discovered because of the large cartel of conspirators needed to do it.
I go with history.
Me I love electronics. E-Voting is nowhere near ready for prime time.
So with your analogy , your saying our current system is perfect and no illegal activity is taking place? So it shouldn`t be changed. Now I understand......
