The only time I watched chess on TV, with the big board behind the host, disecting all the moves!

Today's youth have other viewing preferences.

I was 15 when he won the title. For me that was when Chess went from being just a game to an obsession. I even joined the high school chess team which never existed until then. Two years latter we took second place in the Michigan Upper Peninsula Regional State High School Chess Tournament. Our little Trophy is still displayed in the West Iron County High School trophy case. Fischer was a National Hero back then and it was hard for me to understand what was happening to him and why. Looking back now I think it was an insanity brought on by his own obsession with the 64 squares.

Arguably the most important Icelander in history.

It is possible that Eric the Red, and Leif Ericsson might have a claim to that honor.

No, he wasn’t ours.
He divorced us.

Bobby Fischer praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying America should be "wiped out," and described Jews as "thieving, lying bastards," even though his mother was Jewish.

Fischer and Paul Morphy. Two Americans. Two world champs. Two nuts.

I think he should be chucked in beside Yasser Arafat.

He looked like he’d been dead a couple of weeks already.

I’m with you. I think the man was schizo. People like that never realize they are nuts. They just think the world is out to get them.

It’s a sort of sad illustration of the thought that really brilliant people can be really, really crazy.

Was his mother Jewish?

R.I.P.

Searching for Bobby Fischer remains a great movie.

Is that a fairly current picture? There are homeless mutterers begging on K street who look saner than that. Poor guy.

What was it that Doc Holiday said of Johnny Ringo in “Tombstone?”

“The excitement was more than he could bear.”

RIP Bobby...the things that were excellent truly were excellent.

He was a real loony. Great chess player, though. As an American of Jewish heritage, I say good riddence. As a chess player, I say I hope you have finally found peace of mind, Mr. Fischer.
