I agree with your points on the Constitution and that “we” don’t need to paint him as some “wild-eyed Theocrat”. But, we have to be aware that all of the guns of the MSM would be trained on this man as the Christian Taliban if he ever would miraculously get the Republican nomination. IMO, they are not making a big deal of this now in hope of propping him up to win the primary and then slam him on it in the general.

I guess Huckabee thought that black people were not considered people in the US until the 14th amendment was adopted. If he were to read the original document some day, he might find a clause about counting “three-fifths of all other persons”—meaning slaves. So even slaves were considered “persons,” and free blacks were treated the same as whites or tax-paying Indians as far as representation in Congress was concerned.

I would caution you about shying away from a candidate because of what the MSM might do to him. They can demonize anyone when they put their mind to it. Romney-crazy Mormon,McCain-old, bad health, unstable, Guiliani-adulterer, Thompson-womanizer.

There’s plenty to oppose Huckabee on merit. I try to stick to issues and policies.

The US Constitution cannot be amended to provide a "right" to life. The founding document of our nation, the Declaration of Independence already recognized that as the #1 preeminent right which we all already have - endowed by Almighty God.

but it is about the most eloquent and well reasoned statement on the nature of the constitution that I have heard.

That is EXACTLY the reasoning people use to justify court decisions that are far far from the framers intent. That is the view point spouted by the liberal left the justify all kinds of things. If you really thing that about the constitution you may have stumbled into freerepublic by accident because that is the farthest thing from conservatism.

Huckabee and the Living Constitution [Shannen Coffin]

A friend brought to my attention an interview that Mike Huckabee did with CNN this morning, which is currently available on his website. In the interview, Huckabee calls the Constitution a “living, breathing document,” a phrase that should send shudders down the spine of any conservative concerned about the Supreme Court.

But if you watch the entire interview, it appears as if Huckabee is more clueless when it comes to the Constitution than he is dangerous. He used the phrase in explaining his comments this week that we need to amend the Constitution to please the Almighty (I’m paraphrasing a bit there, I realize). In that context, he explained that the Constitution is intended to be amended through the constitutional process, a correct observation. But in describing that amendment process, he said that the Constitution is a “living breathing document written in order that it could be changed.”

Now I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I prefer to think of the Constitution as a “dead document,” as Justice Scalia describes it. Huckabee’s comments raise questions about whether he understands the Constitution at all, and whether he could be trusted to appoint judges who understand their limited role in our government of separated powers.

Re: Huckabee and the Constitution [Andy McCarthy]

Ramesh, I think, regardless of what Huckabee has said about judges, Shannen is quite right to be concerned given that it was only a couple of days ago that the Governor told us: “I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that’s what we need to do — to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards so it [sic] lines up with some contemporary view.” I’m sure he has an explanation for that one, too — he seems never to be short on either explanations or comments that need to be explained.

Right on! But of course Huckabee thinks Government can do the same things God can...thats why he says he raised hope by raising taxes.

Atta girl.....we've got to stay in fighting shape for the long, hot political summer ahead!

Rudy Guiliani is appearing Sunday afternoon within spittin' distance of me. I'd really like to see him in person, but he's appearing at the same hall where I went to see Fred.....and I can feel FRed's hot breath on my neck if I went to swell the crowd for the competition.

Sorry, Rudy, Fred's my One and Only, and I'll never betray him for you........LOL.

Huckabee sounds like he was advocating a theocracy. I will say this again and again: We do not want a theocracy in this country. A natural result of any theocracy is the implementation of an Unholy Inquisition. The theocrats may call it a holy inquisition, but there is nothing holy about it, it is just a naked power grab.

I haven't listened to the interview but, if that's what he said, he has no clue what the Constitution is about. The Bill of Rights guarantees pre-existing rights. It doesn't grant them.

Regrettably, it doesn't guarantee or protect them. All it does is declare that any government which infringes them is illegitimate.

You are referring to the liberal support of judicial activism. That is NOT what Huckabee is talking about here. Get a clue.

This is crazy… the “living, breathing document” statement is a scary statement no matter how you read it. The Constitution isn’t something that should be played with lightly and it certainly isn’t something that should ever be used to restrict rights, or to restrict access to a particular privilege. The country did that once and it didn’t work out so well…
