Is Negro a Bad Word? UNCF's Big Decision
Diversityinc.com ^ | January 17, 2008 | Eric Hinton

... It's an issue the United Negro College Fund is addressing today … sort of. The 64-year-old organization isn't officially removing "Negro" from its name but rather is unveiling a new branding effort that will focus on the acronym "UNCF." A new logo was unveiled today and the group is refocusing attention to the group's universal catchphrase, "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."

( ... )

By refocusing attention to the acronym, the UNCF follows the lead of the American Association of Retired Persons, which in 1999 legally changed its name to AARP to reflect that its focus had expanded beyond that of just American retirees and to capture more aging baby boomers.

The notion of making a name change for groups such as the NAACP and UNCF are more than simply symbolic. These organizations are seeking to remain relevant and urgently need to attract younger members.

Last year, DiversityInc posed a question to its readers: "Should the NAACP Change its Name?" Responses ran the gamut from readers who said the name had "historical significance" to "the NAACP has remained in a time zone of the '60's" to "It's not the name, it's the direction the organization is going in."

Most “African-Americans” would be hard pressed to name five African countries and the capitals of each country.

BTW, there are five airlines flying out of Houston to Tanzania, Africa. It costs between $1,100 and $1,600 to fly one-way, depending on the airline. So if they really prefer Africa over America, it should be easy to save/borrow/steal $1,600 bucks and just go.

Does that mean “liberal idiots” is not acceptable, where as “idiots who are liberal” is ok?

Very few people are “caucasian” but the term holds in America.

Caucasian

1807, from Caucasus Mountains, between the Black and Caspian seas; applied to the “white” race 1795 (in Ger.) by Ger. anthropologist Johann Blumenbach, because their supposed ancestral homeland lay there; since abandoned as a historical/anthropological term. Lit. meaning “resident or native of the Caucasus” is from 1843. The mountain range name is from Gk. kaukhasis, from Scythian kroy-khasis, lit. “(the mountain) ice-shining.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_race

With the turn away from racial theory in the late 20th century, the term “Caucasian” as a racial classification fell into disuse in Europe. Consequently, in the United Kingdom, the term “Caucasian” is more likely than in the United States to describe people from the Caucasus, although it may still be used as a racial classification.[27] Sarah A Tishkoff and Kenneth K Kidd state, “Despite disagreement among anthropologists, this classification remains in use by many researchers, as well as lay people.”[28] According to Leonard Lieberman, Rodney C. Kirk, and Alice Littlefield, the concept of race has all but been completely rejected by modern mainstream anthropology.[29] In 2003, United States National Library of Medicine stopped using the term Caucasian race in favor of the term “European”.[30] In the United States, the term “Caucasian” has been mainly a distinction based on looking white, and being descended from a people who are “from Europe” .

Bill Cosby is still popular.

Add to that Jamie Foxx.

Chris Rock isn’t as popular.

And David Chapelle was more of a cable sensation.

I have an idea. Let’s call them “Americans.”

That would discriminate against P-QUIS, People of Questionable or Unspecified Immigration Status.

(Who in the very best of Double Think traditions, cannot actually be questioned or quizzed as to their immigration status)...

Yeah - I can't wait for the remake of Blazing Saddles.

I'll give an example of your comment. My mom bought me a membership in AARP for my 50th b-day. I asked her if she wasn't making herself feel old by having a daughter in AARP.

By the way, I never renewed and they still send me the magazine and newspaper.

Negro would seem to still be the most apt term to apply to a race of people with certain skin pigmentation.

African American doesn't do it. It just identifies a geographic location.

I have worked with two white people who were African-American, one born in South Africa and the other in Ethiopia (from Italian parents). They drove the bureaucrats and PC police in Sacramento crazy when they included themselves as African-Americans in meetings, activites, and AA counts, white skin and all.

From my point of view, there's no need to remake a perfect movie.

"refocusing attention to the group's universal catchphrase, "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."" They ought to change the slogan too! How about "A strong back is a terrible thing to waste". and start posting it around all the areas I see where young Black men are sitting on their ass's in the middle of the day doing nothing!

P-QUIS, People of Questionable or Unspecified Immigration Status.

Now that I've had a chance to think that through...

What would you call an American who protects, coddles, or panders to a P-QUIS?

A QUIS-ling, maybe?

From my point of view, there's no need to remake a perfect movie.

As long as there is money to be made off of a remake (no matter how bad it is) there will always be a point.

Besides remakes are a LOT easier than coming up with a new idea...
