Fred has an important job to do still. He must keep the nomination far out of reach of Mike Huckabee. And he must bring the party together as the consensus conservative choice when no candidate comes up with enough delegates to win the nomination.

I agree.

In spite of what a lot of people around here think, I do believe that only McCain will be able to get enough independent and swing votes to BEAT HILLARY.

Huckabee sure as hell can't do it. Neither can Mitt and I'm not sure about Rudy.

The mere thought of Bill Clinton living in the White House again is disgusting and depressing.

Of course, if Obama beats Hillary, then it all over as no Republican will beat him. But at least Bill won't be in the White House again.

What was the last check, 55% of Americans said they’d never vote for Hillary? She has the largest negatives of any major contender, and should be the easiest to beat; far easier to actually present a choice to the voters as Hillary has to continue chasing after the far left who got Monica’s cigar from Bill.

“Of course, if Obama beats Hillary, then it all over as no Republican will beat him.”

You say thast only McCain can beat Hildabeat, and no one can beat Obambi. Thus, if McCain stumbles, yYou seem to be pretty much resigned to a marxist being elected president.

I am not that fearful...yet. I do not believe a majority of the American people have become so suicidal. Oh, 40% have; but not 50.1%

In spite of? :) That scenario might be viable if all of the conservative base voted for him as well.

But it will not

McCain prevailed in a fractured field against 3 or 4 strong candidates and he will not have that luxury against hillary.

Hillary will beat McCain like a drum.

“Of course, if Obama beats Hillary, then it all over as no Republican will beat him.”

That is of course nonsense. “Head to head” polls have shown several Republicans can beat Obama.

The more people hear about Obama’s policies, the more afraid they’ll become.

Are those swing and indies enough to make up for the the conservatives that will sit home in DROVES and watch your party go down in flames?

I do believe that only McCain will be able to get enough independent and swing votes to BEAT HILLARY.

While McCain might get the independent votes, he will lose the core of the GOP conservative base. These will offset, and he will get creamed. Same goes for Rudy. Huckabee will lose the fiscal conservatives and conservatives with any amount of real intelligence, which after viewing these first few primaries one might wonder how big a percentage that really is. But for argument sake, let's assume it is significant. That leaves us with Romney, who has argued during this presidential race all the right positions. But many conclude he is insincere or at least not conservative in his gut.

Without Thompson, this is looking pretty grim.

I disagree. McCain certainly looks strongest now, but I think Mitt would run a stronger and better organized campaign. Further, if, as seems likely, the economy heads south and becomes a bigger issue in the race Mitt’s business experience would give him a huge boost. His biggest weakness on the campaign trail might be his trouble personally connecting with voters (even unlikability), but against Hillary it’s not like he’d be competing with someone strong in this area.

I’m discounting Huckabee since I think he’s unelectable (and everyone here hates him) and Rudy since I don’t think he’s a very good campaigner and would be one of the weaker candidates.

I think you are wrong. If Johnny gets the nod, the MSM will start pounding him in a NY nanosecond. If he did beat the Dem, he would be only marginally better--on abortion and the military--Maybe!

Whose name appears on the most harmful bills in the Senate, along with super libs like Feingold and Kennedy?--none other than John McCain

His stance on illegals and Gitmo would undermine the very national security he touts as his strong points.

The man has a record! Why aren't people concerned about it? I would take Romney or Rudy over McCain--they are known to be more socially liberal, but they have a better fiscal leadership record and they don't have the "maverick's" penchant for planting his feet and pitching a fit to have his way..

We have to have a viable candidate to bring back the congress--at least one house.
