Climate Talk’s Cancellation Splits a Town (Montana)
The New York Times ^ | January 17, 2008 | Jim Robbins

CHOTEAU, Mont. — School authorities’ cancellation of a talk that a Nobel laureate climate researcher was to have given to high school students has deeply divided this small farming and ranching town at the base of the east side of the Rocky Mountains.

The scholar, Steven W. Running, a professor of ecology at the University of Montana, was scheduled to speak to about 130 students here last Thursday about his career and the global changes occurring because of the earth’s warming.

Dr. Running was a lead author of a global warming report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the 400-member United Nations body that shared last year’s Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. But when some residents complained that his presentation here would be one-sided because no opposing view would be offered, the superintendent of Choteau School District No. 1, Kevin St. John, canceled it.

Dr. Running was surprised. “Disbelief was the primary reaction,” he said in a telephone interview. “I’ve never been canceled before. But it was almost comical. I had a pretty candid discussion with the superintendent and the school board, and they said there were some conservative citizens who didn’t want me to speak.”

~~snip~~

Finally, there is the raw politics of the matter. Dr. Running specializes in an issue associated with Mr. Gore, not a popular figure among many in this predominantly Republican town.

...[In an evening talk to the community] Dr. Running did not mention the cancellation or the resulting controversy in his presentation, “The Five Stages of Climate Grief,” which was sponsored by the Sonoran Institute, an environmental group.

The first two of the five stages are denial and anger, Dr. Running said in the phone interview, so he understands the opposition to his addressing the students.

“The Five Stages of Climate Grief”: The first two of the five stages are denial and anger ...

Typical arrogance of those believing in man-caused global warming. Those who have to work hard to make a living in this harsh environment have a better handle on reality than this condescending scientist does. Unfortunately, the liberal "education" (read brainwashing) of the young has succeeded in the case of one young student here. He wrote a letter to a Great Falls paper complaining about the cancellation saying “I don’t feel there is another side. Global warming is not a controversial issue, it’s a fact. We need to be prepared to deal with it.”

I don’t know what the five stages are but I expect that each and every one of them involves massive “research” grants to university climatologists.

Another point:

Dr. Running said high school students were an important audience for his message about climate change ... "because they are the generation that will solve the problem. And we can’t solve the problem without a free discussion.”

It's interesting that "free discussion" does not include those who have a differing opinion. Global-warming "deniers" were kicked out of the recent UN sponsored meeting in Bali, and those who speak out are compared to "Holocaust" deniers. That is changing, slowly, but there is a long way to go.

After the truth comes out, Gore will be arrested for crimes against humanity for causing the starvation of millions by redirecting food to energy.

Well, presumably if one believes in anthropogenic global warming or ‘climate change’, one’s logical faculty is considerably damaged. This, in turn, makes it very easy to believe in other scams and scammers, for example the ‘fair’ tax and the huckster.

...conservative citizens who didn’t want me to speak.

BULL! Citizens are concerned about the totally one-sided AGW slop fed to us and our children and the complete refusal to acknowledge that the science is not settled. The article clearly states that citizens wanted counter points of view, not to hush him up.

“I’ve never been canceled before. But it was almost comical..."

Then he must find hysterical what neoliberals have been doing to conservatives for decades. What a smarmy putz.

“I was insulted as a high school student prepared to enter the world I need to hear both sides of the story,” the student, Kip Barhaugh, 17, said in an interview Tuesday. “I don’t feel there is another side. Global warming is not a controversial issue, it’s a fact. We need to be prepared to deal with it.”

Apparently Mr. Barhaugh has his mind made up, so the talk would have been superfluous in his case.

And what does a Professor of Ecology know about Climate Science? Short answer, nothing except whatever drivel he uses to support his political agenda. Climate Science is for Climate Scientists, not ecological alchemists.

I don’t claim to be up to data on all of the scientific literature, quite a bit of it remains hidden away from the general public, only available to the academic community, or those who can go to a university library and check their copies of the journals.

But, every real scientific paper that I have read does not make the wild claims that are touted in the popular press. Scientists are careful about their reputations and don’t make wild claim that aren’t supported by their research. A different set of rules applies to what they say to the popular press. They can and do make all kinds of wild claims and exaggerations that are no where to be found in their published papers. This gives us two completely different accounts of climate change. Guess which one is closer to the truth?
