Moderate Democrat's Open Letter to Republicans(Orson Scott Card)
www.ornery.org ^ | January 6, 2008 | Orson Scott Card

Posted on 01/20/2008 5:37:10 PM PST by listenhillary

(Large amount of the introduction snipped to get to the meat of the article)

Please read the whole article. http://www.ornery.org/cgi-bin/printer_friendly.cgi?page=/essays/warwatch/2008-01-06-1.html

Do You Think Hispanic Voters Are Blind?
Here’s why this whole anti-illegal-immigrant brouhaha amounts to political suicide for the Republican Party. Hispanics aren’t blind or deaf. They know who hates them, and they aren’t going to vote for that party, ever.

Legal Hispanic-Americans are now about as big a voting bloc as African-Americans. And Republican behavior and rhetoric right now could not be better designed to guarantee that Hispanic voters will be every bit as much in the pocket of the Democratic Party as American Black voters now are.

Do you Republicans understand the demographics here?
The Republican Party owns the White male vote right now—if White males were the only voters, there would have been no Clinton years and Bush would have won in a landslide in both 2000 and 2004.

But White males are just another minority group. Furthermore, the Republican Party does not own them the way that the Democratic Party owns Blacks and is setting up to own Hispanics. Republicans aren’t getting 90% of the White male vote. In fact, White males keep thinking that nobody owns them, and many of them swing back and forth between parties.

So when Republicans permanently alienate Hispanic voters the way they have alienated Black voters, they are getting relatively little in return. (It’s worth pointing out that once a group is completely owned by one party, that party only has to toss them a sop now and then—politicians only keep their promises to swing groups. That’s why Blacks, loyal to the Democratic Party, have so little to show for it.

If Blacks ever cast even thirty percent of their votes for a Republican, the behavior of panicking White Democrats in Congress would change radically, as would the behavior of ecstatic White Republicans: Black voters would matter again. (That’s why careerist Black “leaders” are so eager to convince you that any Black Republican is a “race traitor,” so you won’t actually get uppity and consider unauthorized ideas and unapproved candidates.

(That’s what it means to be “owned.” Hispanics will find the same thing, in due time. Being owned by one party—either of them—means you have no party.)

(Snipped)

The Democratic “Nuclear” Ad
I know exactly the ad that the Democratic candidate will run to destroy the anti-amnesty Republican candidate—Mitt Romney, let’s say.

Here are the visuals: A couple of cute Mexican children, looking frightened, faces tear-streaked, dressed in ragged clothes, being dragged along by adult hands. We don’t see the adults. Then the camera angle widens and we watch as they are herded between rows of soldiers holding guns that are pointed at them. The guns terrify the children and they cry.

Then the camera pulls back and we see that these are American soldiers, and the children are being dragged by their terrified parents, and they are being forced into a huge refugee camp, tents and shacks and cardboard boxes and families sleeping in the open air. Here is what you’ll hear underneath this ad: “Their parents committed a terrible crime. They dared to come illegally into a country where they could earn a better living. They didn’t want to break the law. They just wanted their children to grow up with hope. “Mitt Romney wants to take away that hope.”

Now there’s a sound bite of Romney saying that illegals will never get amnesty and must leave America. The narration continues: “Millions of children who have never known any other home but America. Forced into refugee camps in a country that has no room for them, no work for their parents, no way to feed them.”

Then you end with a picture of Romney at a banquet with lots of rich white people. Cross fade to a picture of Barack Obama speaking to a crowd. “America is still a land of hope and opportunity. Reform immigration law, allow these hardworking parents into our country legally, so they can work to feed their families and help drive our economy.”

Image: The Statue of Liberty. Brief superimposition of that refugee camp; then a thunking sound and the refugee camp disappears. “Obama in 2008” says the caption.

Before you tear into me
1. I want the border closed
2. Tancredo? Duncan Hunter? Where are they now? How well did their message play?

We stopped the amnesty bill, but ask yourself how many moderate voters expressed their outrage? Was congress trying to silence an extremely loud contingent of voters or a true 60 to 70 percent majority of Americans?

Are you so sure that you are willing to bet the election on it?

I'm sorry, what Orson Scott Card is saying is making a whole lot of sense to me. I fear we are handing the Democrats the perfect weapon to crush the Republicans in November.

There has been too much animosity between the blacks and latinos. I don’t see latinos flocking to Obama if he is the Dems candidate for POTUS.

His equation of illegal hispanics with legal resident hispanics is the usual laughable bs. And if the legal residents equate themselves with the illegal ones, then shame on them.

But White males are just another minority group.

Nice to see a Democrat finally admitting that. However, white males will continue to be discriminated against...in the name of retribution for "past wrongs."

Illegals are crushing our cities. They are raising taxes everywhere on the citizenry. The schools are disasters and the healthcare sytem is imploding. The politicians will not close the border because they make nice voters for the Democrats. Once they get them drivers licenses, it will be over for the Republicans anyway. Are you wanting to compete for their illegal votes? It is important to have part time rule over a 3rd world country? That is where we are heading fast.

Somehow, I think the only Republican that could match Hillary’s negatives would MAYBE be Nixon.

I think the article is subjective. What are the statistics. Do legal hispanics tend to suppport Repubs, Dems, or what?

Orson Scott Card addresses some of your points. I would suggest reading the entire article.

I want the border closed. There will be an economic price to pay if we manage to kick out 12 million illegals.

Please read the whole article.

Race baiting, illegal baiting, whatever you want to call it, does not in the end hold water. Because our tv ad will show the next set of terrorists to take us down crossing the border, whacking some border patrol agents - before disappearing into some so called sanctuary city. Fade to mushroom cloud.

I like Orson Scott Card, but he needs to remember that the major rank and file membership of the Democrat Party are very strongly against amnesty as well.

Who cares about what a “moderate” Democrat thinks?

Bush got a healthy share. I think they were breaking two thirds to Democrats in the 2006 elections.

I would have to look it up again. It has been too long.

I work at a local large airplane manufacturer. I work with a number of legal Mexican immigrants. To a person, they don’t like illegal immigrants and are NOT for amnesty. They worked hard to get where they are and don’t like the idea of someone else getting a shortcut. They agree with the Republicans on immigration 100%. Will this turn into votes for Republicans? I don’t know. Depends if they are one issue voters or not.

Orson Scott Card is with us on the war in a BIG way. He is a very thoughtful “moderate” Democrat.

Again - read the article for his reasoning. He is scared to death that Obama or Hillary will win.

All of this is an interesting theory until a plutonium device detonates in an American city. It will be a leftie city, a minority city, a Latino city, a politically correct city. Then the pictures of the children will be different and harder to forget.

I'm sorry, what Orson Scott Card is saying is making a whole lot of sense to me.

Are you high? Tancredo and Hunter are two of 435 House members who are virtual unknowns outside of their districts. They are political lightweights. They had no chance competing against the financing of more powerful candidates. That is why they are no longer here. As for their message, it is alive and well. And last time I checked, your anti-amnesty candidate - Mitt Romney - was winning this thing.

As for Card's claim about Hispanics being as big a voting bloc as African-Americans, the fact remains that they don't vote. Democrats like Maxine Waters and Charles Rangel now live in majority Hispanic districts, yet they keep getting re-elected. Go figure. Besides, legal Hispanics resent illegal Hispanics coming here and depressing their wages.

Illegals do not and never, ever, ever, will vote GOP.

Pander to them and lose us.
That equals nothing, buddy.
