How long ago? There are still plenty of WWII vets around, a lot more Korean War vets and segregation was still commonplace when both of those wars ended. You can tell our public schools do a pathetic job of teaching history because there is now a generation of Blacks who have no idea what their Grandparents went through. Unfortunately they also have no idea which political party was behind most of their problems.
How long?
From my first hand observations, equality of opportunity has been a reality for at least 30 years. Failure to seize that opportunity remains the main problem.

How sad that history is not taught in schools anymore well except the PC history that is.
Most people think the civil war was based on slavery and to free the blacks, they think that the north went to war to save the blacks.They think the confederate flag is racist.
I’m down south in northern Florida and the amount of times I’ve heard ignorant northerners say how they are disgusted to see a a confederate flag is beyond belief.
Mayybe these people if theybhad been taught history would know what they are talking about instead of just being PC and listening to the MSM propaganda
