1880’s and 90’s or 1980’s and 90’s?

If the former, how did they get there illegally in the 19th century? I thought the borders, at least those accessible by sea, were pretty controlled and the ports of entry were limited and regulated (like Ellis Island)?

1980’s and 90’s, LOL. They flew in and overstayed their visas.
