I think that is a sure thing and John Warner likely cut that deal with the naming of the FORD. The Sec of the Navy ignored a lot of letters by vets when he did that. There was a sizable campaign to have the next carrier named AMERICA {as it was sank to gather the data for it} and Warner went behind our backs on the matter.

I read an article somewhere recently about the future status of JFK. Her crew association is the one leading the charge and Ft. Lauderdale is a leading candidate for getting her. There was some talk about putting her up in Boston, but there's not enough available space in the harbor for a permanently moored carrier and even Teddy the Swimmer isn't willing to get Unca Sam to pony up the money to dredge the harbor enough to put her at the Kennedy Library.

Warner's behavior regarding the naming of CVN-78 is pretty perplexing since he was really pushing for CVN-77 to be named "Lexington".

He was Sec of Navy appointed by Nixon 72-74. Maybe a sense of loyalty I don't know. LEXINGTON even for the new one would have not been taken as bad as naming another one after a POTUS especially one that was not even elected to the job. There were several former carrier org wanting the namesake. The hardest one pushing for it was AMERICA. The Navy was never quite upfront with us on preservation attempts either.

Most of us figured when she was fast tracked for a SINKEX for gathering data to build the new class she would get the honor or at least a decent shot. Warner knew about that also. I doubt they will even name a destroyer after our nation again.

Interesting side note too. Clinton considered nominating him as Sec of Defense to replace Aspin.
