Russian scientist says Earth could soon face new Ice Age
Russian News & Information Agency ^

Posted on 01/23/2008 10:09:35 AM PST by Bulwinkle

ST. PETERSBURG, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Temperatures on Earth have stabilized in the past decade, and the planet should brace itself for a new Ice Age rather than global warming, a Russian scientist said in an interview with RIA Novosti Tuesday.

"Russian and foreign research data confirm that global temperatures in 2007 were practically similar to those in 2006, and, in general, identical to 1998-2006 temperatures, which, basically, means that the Earth passed the peak of global warming in 1998-2005," said Khabibullo Abdusamatov, head of a space research lab at the Pulkovo observatory in St. Petersburg.

According to the scientist, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has risen more than 4% in the past decade, but global warming has practically stopped. It confirms the theory of "solar" impact on changes in the Earth's climate, because the amount of solar energy reaching the planet has drastically decreased during the same period, the scientist said.

Had global temperatures directly responded to concentrations of "greenhouse" gases in the atmosphere, they would have risen by at least 0.1 Celsius in the past ten years, however, it never happened, he said.

"A year ago, many meteorologists predicted that higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would make the year 2007 the hottest in the last decade, but, fortunately, these predictions did not become reality," Abdusamatov said.

He also said that in 2008, global temperatures would drop slightly, rather than rise, due to unprecedentedly low solar radiation in the past 30 years, and would continue decreasing even if industrial emissions of carbon dioxide reach record levels.

By 2041, solar activity will reach its minimum according to a 200-year cycle, and a deep cooling period will hit the Earth approximately in 2055-2060. It will last for about 45-65 years, the scientist added.

"By the mid-21st century the planet will face another Little Ice Age, similar to the Maunder Minimum, because the amount of solar radiation hitting the Earth has been constantly decreasing since the 1990s and will reach its minimum approximately in 2041," he said.

The Maunder Minimum occurred between 1645 and 1715, when only about 50 spots appeared on the Sun, as opposed to the typical 40,000-50,000 spots.

It coincided with the middle and coldest part of the so called Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America were subjected to bitterly cold winters.

"However, the thermal inertia of the world's oceans and seas will delay a 'deep cooling' of the planet, and the new Ice Age will begin sometime during 2055-2060, probably lasting for several decades," Abdusamatov said.

Therefore, the Earth must brace itself for a growing ice cap, rather than rising waters in global oceans caused by ice melting.

Mankind will face serious economic, social, and demographic consequences of the coming Ice Age because it will directly affect more than 80% of the earth's population, the scientist concluded.

I am no scientist, but deciding we are heading for an ice age based upon any 10-year analysis seems as ludicrous as using the same period to arrive at the global warming hysteria. Don’t these patterns take hundreds, if not thousands, of years before they have any weight?

If you read it you see that the "Ice Age" was confined mostly to the headline. The scientist is referring to a repeat of the Maunder Minimum, aka the "little ice age" which was short lived (geologically speaking) and did not involve glaciers marching across the planet.

And he used the current sunspot minimum as corroboration. This is all plausible - much more so than the idiotic fantasy of man made global warming - though the case is obviously not proved.

You know, this will mean more trouble raising food, and I know, seriously, we are worried about the affects of our pollution causing serious eco-harm to the oceans where we get a high percentage of our food. With two REAL science issues facing us, why the hell have the socialist morons so fully embraced the lie of “global warming?”

The practical book says that a mini-ice age...like the one we had from the mid 1300s to the late 1700s...is more likely. If you study that period....summer garden periods barely lasted ten to twelve weeks. In Europe in the early 1600s....living up in the Finland and Norway region tested the best of men, and alot of families barely survived through each winter.

If I were to make a comparison....those who live in Tenn...would find themselves with mostly 75 to 85 degree temperatures for Jun, July, and Aug....none of that 90 degree stuff that they are currently used to. Winter temp’s would go down into the 15-30 degree range for at least two months out of the winter.

The bad news...you will burn lots of heat to keep the house warm, and you will find a very limited gardening period. Farmers in the midwest will still produce wheat and America will survive on...with some issues. This isn’t the end of life....its simply what our ancestors had to face...over and over. So you might want to get used to the idea and maybe over the next twenty years...you will find yourself in such a mini-glacier period.

Notice how “globull warming” has morphed into “climate change”.

Going to be pretty hard to sell “carbon credits” now.

One is mindful of the “tulip and bulb craze” that seized Holland between 1634 and 1637. The bulbs had first been imported from Asia Minor in the late 16th Century, and were comparatively rare. The tulips were attacked by a specific mosaic infection, which caused some spectular color changes in the blooms. The showy blooms were widely sought after, causing a serious skew in the prices, a real market bubble.

At the peak of this craze, people were liquidating entire estates to make even small purchases of bulbs, and all the oxygen was sucked out of every other part of the market. When the crash came, it dragged down the entire economy of Holland, and an extended depression resulted.

The same thing is lying in wait for carbon credits, as the planet goes through one of ts cyclic cooling periods.

In fact, the current depression of stock prices might even be traced to the overinvestment in “green” technologies that do not recognize economic realities.

What we need to do is drill into those northern oil fields before the ice sheets bury them. Also buy more gas eating autos and cause more carbon emissions to warm up the atmosphere. Lot’s we can do to fight this coming cold.
