According to the people who know, this is what happened:
The suspect tried to run over a U.S. Border Patrol agent somewhere around Double Adobe Road and Highway 191, about 6 miles north of Highway 80. This all went down about 10 a.m.
Apparently he was not successful and the Border Patrol agent opened fire, wounding the driver. The driver has been medevaced to Tucson for his gunshot wounds.
That marks the second time in a week that someones tried to run over a Border Patrol agent.
Last Saturday, Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar was killed by a runaway Hummer that ran him over when he was trying to put out a spike strip near Yuma.
The suspect in that murder was arrested by Sonoran state police Tuesday. Jesus Navarro Montes is in the custody of the Federal Attorney Generals Office in Mexicali.
Heres a couple photos of Navarro when he was popped. (Courtesy: Policia Estatal Preventiva, Hermosillo office)
Yeah let’s not make a habit of running over border agents. I want those robocop drones with the huges guns patrolling the border
Arrest of agent imminent....
That photo is from 2003, so I take it he’s a criminal that keeps strolling across the “border.”
Oh oh. Another agent going to prison ...
A RUNAWAY Hummer? I do believe that the driver intentionally ran over the agent and the Hummer was fully under his control at the time.
Didn’t get him that time.
Yeah, it’s not the armed-to-the-teeth illegal alien drug smugglers, it’s the rogue Hummers that dart off on their own and run over Border Patrol agents that are causing all the trouble.
Bush is salivating.
And do either one of the border guards who have this guy in custody look like nativist xenophobes to you?
Paging Johnny Sutton...
They look like Mexican federales to me.
The border guard needs more time at the range. Go for the head shot!
Good eye. From what I have read elsewhere he got locked up before for being a coyote (people smuggler).
Those are state police in Mexicali, Baja California, not US border patrol agents, if that is what you are referring to in your post. Apparently the driver of the “out of control” Hummer is awaiting extradition from Mexicali, a city just south of the California border in Mexico. The issue will be whether or not the driver of the “out of control” Hummer will face a death penalty if returned to the US for trial. THAT is the issue here. Mexico does not return its citizens who commit crimes (alleged) in the US if the penalty on conviction is death, although that is changing, slightly.
I expect Johnny Sutton to come along and throw that border patrol agent in jail for ten years.
Damn Hummers.
Johnny Sutton
