A former Florida college professor who pleaded guilty to aiding a Palestinian terrorist group was not immune from a subpoena forcing him to testify in an unrelated probe of Muslim charities, an appeals court ruled Friday.
Sami Al-Arian, 50, had argued the terms of the plea agreement exempted him from testifying before a grand jury in an investigation of Islamic charities in Virginia.
A federal judge disagreed and found Al-Arian guilty of contempt when he refused to testify.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied Al-Arian's appeal Friday, ruling that federal prosecutors did not violate the plea agreement by forcing him to testify in the Virginia case.

As I understand it, officials did not successfully force him to testify.
They tried to force his testimony and he refused.
The judge then added a contempt charge to his original sentence but later on the charge was dropped.
So he never testified and he never will serve an extra minute due to his contempt of the court order to do so.
The government may have won a legal battle but Al-Arian, the supporter and financer of terrorists, won the battle of wills and won the war.
Even if he’d testified, he would have lied. His testimony is worthless if compelled only by court order.
Then, take him out of the country, somewhere, doesn't matter where, and have someone with a loaded pistol look him in the eye and borrow Jack Bauer's line: ''It's gonna be a long time before you feel this good again.''
I don't get it. He pled guilty, was sentenced to 4 yrs 9 mos and will get out in April? Wish I could do my banking with that math.

He was a teacher at the University of South Florida where Betty Castor the president of said University supported his “rights”.
She lost the senate battle to Mel Martinez in Florida.
The real question is whether the terrorist loving Castor could possibly have been a worse senator than Mel Martinez.
Martinez is the p.o.s. that backed the amnesty with all his might. He also supports McLame.

Are you certain of your facts? I was there at the time, and Betty Castor bent over backwards to get rid of Al Arian in a legal manner to avoid his coming back and winning on appeal. I don't necessarily like her, but she didn't do anything wrong in the Al Arian instance. And subsequent court events proved her right. The first trial results which did not find him guilty are what resulted in his plea bargain to avoid another trial with a possible conviction. Castor's efforts to get rid of him were thwarted at almost every turn. The end result is that he's no longer teaching at USF, and that was the extent of her authority to make happen. She succeeded.

I heard she had tried to stop his ouster.
