COLUMBIA, S.C. - Barack Obama routed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the racially-charged South Carolina primary Saturday night, regaining campaign momentum in the prelude to a Feb. 5 coast-to-coast competition for more than 1,600 Democratic National Convention delegates.
Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina was running third, a sharp setback in the state where he was born and scored a primary victory in his first presidential campaign four years ago.
The Associated Press made its call based on surveys of voters as they left the polls.
About half the voters were black, according to polling place interviews, and four out of five supported Obama. Black women turned out in particularly large numbers. Clinton and Edwards each won roughly 40 percent of the white vote, with about 25 percent going to Obama, the first-term Illinois senator.
The victory was Obama's first since he won the kick-off Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. Clinton, a New York senator and former first lady, scored an upset in the New Hampshire primary a few days later. They split the Nevada caucuses, she winning the turnout race, he gaining a one-delegate margin. In a historic race, she hopes to become the first woman to occupy the White House, and Obama is the strongest black contender in history.

guess Oprah helped him after all
Fox called it the second they closed the doors to the polls, even though people were still voting. I assume the others did as well.
hell no. The Clintons were expecting this and their strategy is working well.
I think as long as Edwards stays in this Hillary has no chance.
I guess RATS in SC are not ready for a woman to be President.
Of course he did there's lots of blacks there, you know.
</Clinton>
Um... Did I miss something here? With 0% of precincts reporting, they are calling the election?
I suggest counting the votes first.
Even Dems are beginning to realize that the Hildebeast is exactly that. It is what it is.
Fox was just talking about the vote breakdown. If you were black, you voted for Obama. If you were a white womand, you voted for Hillary. If you were a white man, you voted for Edwards.
Seems like a racist, sexist bunch of voters to me.
Obama got 25% of the white vote which is more than expected. He was expected to get only 10%. This bodes well for him on Super Tuesday.
Not suprising, it looks like Hilary could be “toast” soon.
Barack Hussein Obama; the defender of infanticide, the promoter of abortion on demand, which has brutally killed far more blacks in America than slavery ever did. Margaret Sanger’s racist eugenicist dream come true. What a nightmare.
Nah... Everyone is calling it. Apparently the vote was so skewed they had no difficulty calling it. The only mystery is whether Hillary will come in 3.
Sorry, I won’t believe the witch is dead until I see her toes curl.
Second it.
Interesting observation. Obama is already talking him up as Atty General, hoping to scalp some labor voters. He has some cash, he can hang around until he gets the deal he wants.
We may end up with 2 brokered conventions... which should mean lots of fun for the voters, but probably not a good choice in the general.
Used to be the scary thought was Hillary as Pres. Now the scary thought is Obama as Pres. Time to unite behind Romney.
Looks like she is getting there.
