The baqqara tribes do not see themselves as subordinate to the Nile valley Arabs who rule in Khartoum; they can recall the time when the baqqara ruled the entire Sudan from 1885 to 1898.

Somehow the author manages to leave out that this was during the rule of the mahdi, a proto-Osama.

Of course, in 1898 the Brits god sufficiently annoyed at the Mahdi and the British public got sufficiently worked up about the death of Gordon that they sent in the PBI to put the Mahdi out of business.
