I don't like Romney, but I don't like the other GOP Presidential candidates either. I was pulling for FRed.

Might as well use a dartboard and blindfold to pick.

I think the Captain has been a bit kind to some of them, perhaps all of them, even.
But overall, I agree with the assessment.
Giuliani could have been a good candidate on many levels, but his basic fear of the GOP electorate gave him cold feet and he was more concerned with not losing than with winning.

Giuliani hasn’t worn well, either, and he actually diminished his record by cautiously clinging to his three-legged platform of 9/11, New York City, and Ronald Reagan.

Giuliani eventually even lost the Fox News vote to John McCain, who now keeps telling us in sing-song tones that Florida Governor Crist endorsed McCain (so we better fall in line) every 15 minutes.

They’re also pushing McCain’s lies about Romney’s record unchallenged, when even the AP called BS.

First, I want to have someone who supports conservative values. In this, we have no perfect candidates. Fred Thompson came closest, but he quit,

*sigh*

We have one candidate who has undeniable success in the global markets, who understands them and the players that run them.

This is exactly the reason I have decided to vote for Romney.

Mitt, however, has shown that he will fight in every state, while Rudy played a bit of rope-a-dope -- and has apparently lost the gamble.

Mitt had a little more personal wealth to throw at "every state".

I wall pulling for Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson, but in my heart I knew neither of them were going to make it.

I am disappointed that Duncan Hunter endorsed Huckabee. Now, this is just my opinion, but I feel deep in my heart, America is not going elect a guy named Huckabee. Just a gut opinion, the same way I knew in my heart there was going to be no President Hunter and no President Thompson.

I will have to throw my support behind Romney as well. I have said in the past, it is my opinion that he isn’t an evil slickmeister the way he is being painted by some.

I know that isn’t going to change any minds, but it is the way I feel. Just an opinion...

I agree with Cap’n Ed: Romney is an excellent candidate. The idea that there was a perfect conservative “candidate” out there was a myth. Duncan Hunter was simply not a legitimate candidate, and then he goes and endorses Huckabee. Fred has supported McCain and free-speech restricting campaign finance reform in the past. In almost all respects, Romney is a better candidate than GHWB & Bob Dole. In many respects he’s better than GWB. I appreciate conservatives like Rush, Ann Coulter, and Captain Ed for stepping in and providing much needed perspective for the GOP on our candidates.

I’ve settled on Romney, but I’m not enthusiastic about him. I was a Fred guy too.

For all of McCain’s virtues...military hero, steadfast on the war...I just can’t take his positions on immigration or government meddling.

I respect Ed Morrissey greatly, and over time I have grown to depend on him for the best analysis of many situations.

He just outlined what I have been throwing around in my head.

I voted early in TN and, without our native son in the race, here is what I did:

I voted for Romney (along with my grandma and mom) for the sole purpose of knocking out McCain. It was painful, but that is what had to happen. However, as a true FredHead, I gave all of the delegate votes to sworn Thompson people. I hope that if our convention is brokered, that those people will endorse Thompson once again. Maybe it was foolish, but I just couldn’t give delegates to anyone else.

My Vote (Captain Ed Endorses Romney)

=8-0

Note to Morrissey: Cap, you'd better hope Romney's business dealings are all above board...

CNN is reporting Fred has endorsed Romney. I do not know if that is factual yet.

I was pulling for Fred too. I am now pulling for Romney.

Getting Captain Ed's endorsement is pretty impressive I'd say.

Interesting analysis. There's a couple more aspects that people should also consider. Barack Obama's message of hope, vague though it is, seems to have struck a cord with many. Obama is young and is attracting young voters into the process. If he is their nominee, sending a 72 year old, long time Senator up against him would very likely be disastrous for the Republican Party. Can you just imagine the debates? It would be Nixon vs. Kennedy all over again.

And then there's the Senator vs. Senator or Senator vs. Governor dynamic. No Senator has won the Presidency since JFK. The last 4 out of 5 Presidents have been Governors. A Senator vs. Senator race would eliminate that dynamic and bring the decision down to who do you like more? Liberal or no, Obama is vastly more likable than John McCain any day.

The best option, using this criteria, is to send a young(ish), energetic Governor with vast amounts of executive experience up against such an opponent. Mitt Romney is the only person in the race that fits that description. Plus, when Romney has talked about change and vision, he's actually been specific in what he wants to do.

And, if Hillary (also a Senator) gets the nod, and this is still the most likely outcome, this analysis still holds only more so. In her obsession to become President, Hillary and her husband will have so damaged the DNC's relationship with the black community by using the Democrat establishment to mercilessly beat down a black man that she may not be able to get enough votes to beat her Republican opponent. Again, a youthful, energetic Governor (read Washington outsider) would be best suited to go against such an opponent.

That's my two-cents, anyways.
