I recall seeing old magazine ads from 1940 which asked Americans to donate their unused firearms for use by the British home guard. My understanding is that the British had gone through a period of civilian disarmament between world wars, leaving the nation exposed.

Oh well, maybe they can ask their criminals to do their fighting next time since they have appeared to have retained their weapons.
