Vermont Anti-Bush Petition Sparks Anger Jan 30 05:20 AM US/Eastern By JOHN CURRAN Associated Press Writer BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - A town petition making President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney subject to arrest for crimes against the Constitution has triggered a barrage of criticism from people who say residents are "wackjobs" and "nuts."

In e-mail messages, voicemail messages and telephone calls, outraged people are calling the measure the equivalent of treason and vowing never to visit Vermont.

"Has everyone up there been out in the cold too long?" said one.

"I would like to know how I could get some water from your town," said another. "It's obvious that there is something special in it."

The petition—with more than 436 signatures, or at least the 5 percent of voters necessary to be considered—was submitted Thursday and the town Select Board voted 3-2 Friday to put it on the ballot. It goes to a town-wide vote March 4.

It reads: "Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the law of the Town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro Police, pursuant to the above- mentioned indictments, arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them?"

News of the measure made the rounds on the Internet, and soon people started calling and writing. The Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce got about 60 e-mails Monday, all of them negative, said Executive Director Jerry Goldberg.

I knew a bunch of NY ‘progressives’, who in the late 60’s headed up to Vermont to poison that almost pristine state. They have, I have been told, moved there in droves.

What a friggin shame.

At this time it would be better for them to secede and get annexed by Canada.

A city dealing with crimes against the Constitution?

I wonder how the folks in Brattleboro, VT deal with illegal aliens.

I think Brattleboro has a wonderful idea. I’d love to be there when the local Barney Fife tries to arrest either Cheney or Bush...

It is one of the most disappointing things, the way Vermont has been taken over by liberals.

There are still a lot of hard-working conservatives up there, but just as likely, mentally disturbed (and disturbing) leftists who embrace all the unpalatable characteristics that embody the left from the sexual (gender “identity” issues) to the political (socialism). An institutional expression of “Bush Derangement Syndrome” is natural and accepted up there.

My wife and I recently had the opportunity to drive up to St. Johnsbury, and it was like going back in time a little bit. We drove through some extremely rural parts, and saw more than one large sign (in several cases painted on a side of a house or barn) stating “Take Back Vermont”.

Just as I thought:

The petition has no legal standing, since the town attorney has no authority to write an indictment and the police have no authority to arrest Bush or Cheney if either visits Brattleboro.

Classic style over substance BS.

The reaction caught town officials off guard, and left some workers on edge.

"We have some concerns about safety," said Town Clerk Annette Cappy. "After reading some of these e-mails, you can't help it."

Typical libs; stir the pot and then wet yourself when things don't go your way. Disgusting that they're such cowards.

Those “Take Back” signs have been up since right after Vermont put the civil unions law into effect. They ain’t gonna take back anything there, trust me. They are way beyond the tipping point and we here in NH aren’t far behind. :(

Excerpt: “We have some concerns about safety,” said Town Clerk Annette Cappy. “After reading some of these e-mails, you can’t help it.”
Acting Police Chief Eugene Wrinn said any threats would be taken seriously and possibly prosecuted. So far, no threats have been made, he said.
Observation: Now there’s a thought. Just how much of the town’s resources are they prepared to spend chasing down these threatening scofflaws?

Excerpt: “Kurt Daims, who submitted the petition, said late Tuesday he was chagrined that the town and its employees were subject to ridicule.”
Observation: Well, what did this numbskull expect? Certainly, one of the purposes of making such a legislative statement is to put the world on notice regarding the collective view. And, then you feel bad when some folks don’t agree...alot?

Excertpt: “I feel bad for people who are loyal to Bush who have lost a son or had one in the service and it’s hard for them to admit the utter waste of it, and that it was caused by this man in the White House,”
Observation: And, out of respect for the memory of those brave souls who paid the ultimate price, you should immediately rescind this legislative drivel. Perhaps, you could start a secessionist movement, instead. I hear Canada is short a few moonbats.

Lock and Load.

Brattleboro folks are a perfect example of the kind of folks I deal with daily in MA... truly off their rockers.

My statement is backed up by the fact that Howard Dean was elected governor instead of dog catcher. Then, there's the repeated election of Ted Kennedy and John Kerry to the Senate. All important offices in MA are held by moonbats with chips on their shoulders.

It's the rare moment in time that a somewhat normal person holds an elected office in MA. Mitt Romney was somewhat normal BUT he didn't have a chance to get anything done because of the entrenced Democrats in the State Senate.

I think every state should stop any vehicle with Vermont license plates, peace symbols or similar bumper stickers and arrest the driver for treason.

I used to love to go up there just for a night and visit the Calvin Coolidge Homestead. I have little desire to go there or to NH anymore now that I have come to disdain the people who live there so much. Maybe that’s a bad attitude but they have ruined it for me. And speaking of Calvin Coolidge, he must be looking down on his native state and weeping now.
