Arizona Sen. John McCain refused to apologize yesterday for his use of a racial slur to condemn the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured and held him captive during the war.

``I hate the gooks,'' McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. ``I will hate them as long as I live.''

McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent five years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp, was questioned about the language because of a story last month in the Nation magazine reporting his continued use of the slur.

Since then, reports of McCain's language have been circulating on Internet chat sites and e-mails among Asian Americans, many of whom find the the term offensive and inappropriate for an elected official....

I know this is old, but drudge has it posted and this is the first I have seen of it. Being and conservative Independant, I dont have a dog in the Romney/McCain fight, but this makes me lean towards McCain. Not because of what he said, but because he refused to appologise.

Ditto, and given what McCain went through, he is entitled to his view.

Gook. Didn’t know what the word meant until now.

In other breaking news, Zogby tells us that McCain is the only one who can beat Gore. Bush has no chance in the general election.

As long as he only uses that word against North Vietnamese and not against decent Asians, I guess it’s allright.

If he’s a racist against Asian people, that’s a shame. I won’t vote for him. I’ll sit it out.

Rest assured you’ll see it again. For about 8 months or so.

I remember this very well from the 2000 campaign. It didn’t get much play from the MSM, since he was not the nominee. If he had become Majority Leader or gets the nod this time, you can bet it will be dusted off and run into the ground.

Given what McCain experienced at the hands of Vietnamese torturers, I think he can have this view if he wants. I’ve met some vets who fought the Japanese in WW2 that to this day still don’t like them because of the things the Japanese soldiers would do on the battlefield.

If this makes you lean to McCain...you have issues.

He will turn the USA into Mexico.

Look at how he has voted, look at his bills.

McCain/Feingold
McCain/Kennedy
McCain/Lieberman
McCain/Edwards

Would anyone chide a survivor of the Batan Death March if they persisted in referring to their captors as Japs?

If he were a RAT, the MSM would have nothing to say.

I’m not going to vote for McCain, not no way, not no how.

But this is just silly. If I had been through what he’s been through, I might not be too complimentary or PC about my torturers either.

This issue has come up so many times about McCain. He has said the same thing each time. With what those guards did to me I can never forgive them and will always call the gooks. How is that a racial slur?

Wonder how long before the PC Police sue the PGA for having golf courses with “slope” ratings.

I am of Asian ascent and I am not offended. I’ve been called that name by people before, especially during the Vietnam era. I do not let such things bother me. It is the user’s problem, not mine.......

If he weren’t running for President of the United States..I would agree with you.

But he is and things like that cannot be said, much less continued without an apology.

Sorry, but anyone who has had to endure what John McCain has, should HAVE to pass a few zillion mental competency tests before allowed to run for President.

I don’t mean that disrespectfully.
