I remember the first time I experienced a place like that—my uncle had an old farmhouse that was built in the 1700s.

We’d go there for vacations, winter, summer, fall, and spring.

Only heat was a wood-stove and fireplace.

Water was from a bucket in a well.

No electricity—kerosene lamps and candles instead.

No plumbing, we used an outhouse.

I’ll never forget the first time I, a city kid, went there—good grief, it was like I had been living with a blanket over my head my whole life--it was like heaven.

I have loved places like that and hated cities ever since.

And watching the weather and the seasons change, is better than anything on TV.

Thoreau had the right idea.
