As McCain Wins, Critics on Right Look Again
The New York Times ^ | February 1, 2008 | David D. Kirkpatrick

WASHINGTON — Senator John McCain has long aroused almost unanimous opposition from the leaders of the right. Accusing him of crimes against conservative orthodoxy like voting against a big tax cut and opposing a federal ban on same-sex marriage, conservative activists have agitated for months to thwart his Republican presidential primary campaign.

That, however, was before he emerged this week as the party’s front-runner.

Since his victory in the Florida primary, the growing possibility that Mr. McCain may carry the Republican banner in November is causing anguish to the right. Some, including James C. Dobson and Rush Limbaugh, say it is far too late for forgiveness.

But others, faced with the prospect of either a Democrat sitting in the White House or a Republican elected without them, are beginning to look at Mr. McCain’s record in a new light.

“He has moved in the right direction strongly and forcefully on taxes,” said Grover Norquist, an antitax organizer who had been the informal leader of conservatives against a McCain nomination, adding that he had been talking to Mr. McCain’s “tax guys” for more than a year.

Tony Perkins, a prominent Christian conservative who has often denounced Mr. McCain, is warming up to him, too.

“I have no residual issue with John McCain,” Mr. Perkins said, adding that the senator needed “to better communicate” his convictions on social issues.

Richard Land, an official of the Southern Baptist Convention and a longtime critic of Mr. McCain, agreed, saying, “He is strongly pro-life.”

“When I hear Rush Limbaugh say that a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican Party,” Dr. Land added, “what I want to say to Rush is, ‘You need to get out of the studio more and talk to real people.’ ”...[edit]

The New York Times is still covering for McCain. If McCain triumphs on Super Tuesday, the Times will pounce on McCain on Wednesday.

“We recognize that conservatives will be instrumental to our victory in November and we are reaching out and taking their advice,” said Jill Hazelbaker, a McCain spokeswoman.

They may wait a little longer until he has a clear majority of delegates. By then, it will be too late to replace the S.O.B.

Will likely spend general election day doing some home repairs. I will never vote for an enemy of Americans.

No conservative would ever give McCain a second look. And it's not over the issues The New York Times mentioned. It's amnesty, silencing free speech, global warming hoax, the gang of 14, and just his total disrespect for conservatives!

Michael Reagan said it best...

"As I watched McCain and Governor Romney go at it during the debate at the Reagan Library I was struck by the huge gap that separates McCain -- whose contempt for his fellow humans is patently obvious -- and my dad, Ronald Reagan, who had nothing but the deepest affection and respect for the American people."

I don’t listen to Rush that often, but when I do, I notice he does talk to people. They call in all the time.

I would have guessed they would drop their first bombs after the convention , but they will enjoy it so much they probably can't wait .

From the New York Times to God’s ear........The NYSlimes would love nothing better than to have the Kennedy clone, McCain, as the Republican nominee. In the general election, they would be winners either way! One socialist is as good as another.

Super Tuesday? Romney gets my vote. Screw the NYSlimes and their McCrap shills!

Yeh, notice how the Scumbag Times left out the one issue that conservatives could never forgive—McCain’s amnesty over a period of years, not just this last amnesty push.

Tony Perkins is, as his predecessor Ralph Reed, a sell-out. I’ve seen Perkins interviewed over the last three months and it’s clear he was warming to Ghouliani and now Johnny Mac. I don’t see Gary Bauer “warming up” to him, however. The Religious Right tend to be less anti-illegal alien than other conservatives like me. To them, the gay marriage issue and abortion are the most important issues. The Invasion by Mexico (continuing at a 5,000 to 10,000 per day pace) is the most important issue.

All conservatives need to remember is the oft-spoken line by my favorite conservative talk show host, Terry Anderson:

“My mother told me that the lesser of two evils is still ‘evil’!”

Terry’s mother was right.

I was willing to look again. But his performance at the debate was so hideous, so smug, so self-important. That self-satisfied little smirk, his refusal to let go of “timetables” long after the audience was booing him, that grotesque weasel Giuliani hovering over his shoulder this morning. Ugh!

I will NOT vote for John McCain. And I've been one of the Freepers saying he's not as bad as people say he is. Well, I was wrong about that. The man is trash.

He fought for looser immigration rules.

What the hell does that mean? Was McCain on a school board or in the United States Senate? Hey, Mr. MSM Journalist dude, Senators are called legislators because they not only make new laws but they are sworn to uphold the Constitution and enforce the laws already on the books. The discussion here is not about immigration which is legal. It is about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and Vincente, Jorge, Teddy, and Johnny Boy McCain giving amnesty to lawbreakers, drug smugglers, and security risks. Looser immigration rules, what a joke. This MSM clown does not even know what to call the thing he is trying to discuss. The NYT probably has rules against using the words illegal immigration.

Hillary’s uphill battle to win the presidency with such high negatives has been much discussed here. Now the Republican’s are on the threshold of selecting a nominee that has to reach out to his own party. Once again, it appears we will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I am a religious far right conservative. But I believe in the Constitution and the rule of law. You are right though, many Christians think being compassionate is the governments job. It is not. There are so many issues McCain is wrong on, I can’t even write them all down. The bottom line is, he belongs in the Democrat party. If he gets the nomination, I will no longer be a Republican!

McCain pretends to move to the right prior to every election that he runs in. After the election he’s goes back to helping the rats advance their agenda.
