Sore Winner - McCain Isn't Acting Like a Frontrunner. (Mona Charen)
National Review ^ | February 1st, 2008 | Mona Charen

Usually the guy who’s ahead finds it within himself to be gracious to his competitors whereas the desperate runner-up goes negative and reaches for any stick. So it was peculiar to watch John McCain sneering and slicing his way through the debate with Mitt Romney at the Reagan library. When McCain was given up for dead last summer, he was witty and fun on the stump. Now that he is the frontrunner he is snarky and obnoxious. Dr. Freud, call your office.

They say that John McCain harbors a particular dislike for Romney. And why would that be? Well, Romney is pretty much the only candidate in the race who has had the temerity (a.k.a. cash) to run ads criticizing McCain. The senator from Arizona has some fine qualities but no one has ever suggested that enduring criticism manfully is one of them. He tried his best to make such effrontery illegal with the McCain/Feingold campaign finance law. Romney found a loophole and Sen. McCain is irritated.

John McCain hates people who do not bow down to his superiority.

Practically everything I hear and read is anti-McCain, with the exception of Medved making a complete idiot of himself defending amnesty and tax hikes. Where is Captain Queeg getting support from? I know that the liberal media elite is doing all it can for him, but who is voting for this guy? He must be stopped on Tuesday!

Take a Midol, Mona. This isn't tiddlywinks. This is a real election with real consequences and your boyfriend Romney spent the GDP of a small nation attacking McCain. I saw and heard the ads in NH and I'm sure they were the same variety in FL and elsewhere. If Romney can't handle a few retaliatory punches, he shouldn't be so quick to pick fights.

No one will tolerate a sucker punch and Romney was the first candidate to go negative in this race-- understand that. He was the only person who could afford it! I'm not a McCain fan, but if I were McCain I would be pissed at the piles of lies dumped on me by Romney's campaign, too, and I'd punch back. I don't want an Obama nancy boy as my candidate who just lets the other candidate beat him up without beating back, because Hillary will try to castrate with scissors any one of these guys who face her this fall.

Defending McCain? You must have a problem with Romney’s religion. Get over it.

I didn't see any negative ads here in Florida. On either side. That being said, will McLame now ask to repeal McCain-Feingold? Since Romney's money hasn't bought him victory, it is obvious wealth doesn't influence politics.

1. Against drilling in ANWR
2. Believes in global warming scam
3. Voted AGAINST tax cuts and LIED about the reason he did it.
4. Gang of 14
5. AMNESTY Bill
6. Seriously considered being John Kerry’s running mate.
7. Says he going to punish those evil Wall Street capitalists.

Based on the above, I believe that I can say that John McCain should be the nominee for President, of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

A guy from our church new McCain years ago and used to ask him questions about abortion and why he wasn’t against it. He got reamed out a few times with McCain’s horrific temper tantrums. He’s not what he seems to be to most folks.

All of the candidates couldn’t stand Romney. The reason is that he is patently dishonest, will lie about anything and say anything to get a vote. He backs his lies with money.

I think that what he’s doing to Romney is worse than anything that might have happened to McCain in South Carolina ten million years ago. Huckaby can only still be in the race to be a spoiler against Romney. What do you suppose the deal is between McCain and Huckaby?

Going negative, and going comparative, are different things. Romney’s ads were quite tame compared to what we’ve seen in past elections. How else does one point out differences. Mona is right. McCain can’t stand criticism, he can’t stand being wrong, he’s the little kid who takes his marbles home if you don’t play the game his way. His palpable inflexibility . . . not to mention his high blood pressure and his tendency to lose a gasket a la Governor Dean . . . are NOT what we need in the White House.

I've lost almost all respect for Medved, and I had quite a bit before the past couple of weeks. His schtick now is so obviously, "make the facts fit my position" - I don't know how he sleeps at night.

Rush's replacement on the air right now is talking about logic of just letting this one go - "never would have had Reagan without Carter," etc. I'm beginning to think this way too.

Huckabee was a target of Romney's attack ads, too. As far as Romney's religion, I don't care that he's a Mormon. I care that he says whatever he thinks will make people like him today and say something else tomorrow if that will make people like him then. He's a phony. There are phony people in all religions. He's not a phony because he's a Mormon. He's a phony because he chooses to be and because he thinks he can get away with it because he's so purty.

Well if McCain didn’t get all the free airtime from the alphabet outlets he would have had to spend the same amount if not more than Romney. Criticism is always considered negative by those who support the person being critiqued. Plain and simple McCain will do far worse to the national side of the GOP than Mitt could have ever come close to in Mass. But keep on swinging slugger!
