Clinton’s Gradual Education on Issues of Race [NYT Puff Piece]
The New York Times ^ | February 2, 2008 | Mark Leibovich

Growing up in the palest of Chicago suburbs, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton had some of her earliest exposures to African-Americans through..

snip

She demonstrated for racial equality, but it was just one of the items on her activism list (which included protesting the Vietnam War, agitating to allow cars on campus and fighting for the legal interests of children).

In promoting her civil rights record, Mrs. Clinton takes a sweeping view, incorporating a great deal of her work for the vulnerable and underserved...

snip

The city of Park Ridge, 15 miles northwest of Chicago, was mostly devoid of blacks, Hispanics and liberals....

“I used to go to Sunday school and sing ‘Jesus Loves the Children of the World,’ and I just couldn’t believe it.”....

Mrs. Clinton made her first black friend in college: Karen Williamson, one of six African-Americans... They went to church together one Sunday...

As a sophomore, Mrs. Clinton volunteered as a “Big Sister” to a 7-year-old black girl...

Mrs. Clinton brooded over the nature of privilege, suffering and race....

In the fall of 1966, she attended a “black power” meeting... but disapproved of the group’s extreme “attitude toward civil disobedience,”...

...Mrs. Clinton discouraged a campus organization of black women from initiating a hunger strike... She pushed instead for a two-day student strike.

snip

Though it teemed with radical activism in the early 1970s — and New Haven was aflame over a Black Panthers murder trial — Mrs. Clinton immersed herself in the less inflammatory field of child advocacy...spending months on a case involving... custody of a 2-year-old girl.

snip

In Washington, as in Arkansas, Mrs. Clinton viewed civil rights within her broader portfolio of causes...“Low wages, poor health care and lack of educational opportunities disproportionately impact people of color in this country,” Ms. Williams said.

Advertisement for Hillary disguised as an article in the NYT.

Basically, the article attempts, by implication, to portray Obama as just the "black candidate" in that Hillary is portrayed is having broader concerns than merely civil rights for blacks, i.e., that she's also concerned about the chil'run, health care, education, etc., but of course including blacks within that "portfolio of causes."

The article tries to distance her from "black power" and the Black Panthers and in discussing her activities at Yale dishonestly leaves out her work on behalf of the ACLU with other leftwing students monitoring a murder trial of Black Panthers for possible legal errors they could raise on appeal, or her later internship with Black Panther defender Robert Treuhaft in San Francisco. The article implies she did not become involved in the Black Panthers trial but instead spent months in the "less inflammatory" work of victims of child abuse.

The article also tries to distance hers from Bill, who is lumped in as one of the "supporters of Mrs. Clinton's campaign" accused of "racially tinged attacks."

The article spins her swipe at Martin Luther King, Jr. in which she said LBJ should get the real credit for black civil rights, as if she was criticizing only Obama for merely “taking to the streets” and “giving speeches,” which makes no sense since Obama has sought and obtained elective office in order to make change, as opposed to MLK who took to the streets and gave speeches.

Hillary's father is portrayed in the article as Archie Bunker, and no doubt Sally Strothers will play Hillary in the movie.

Much of the article has the tone of "but some of her best friends are black...."

Geee....she’s a veritable Mother Theresa!!!! Saint Hillary .....she’s practically Jesus!

I actually had a friend like this...she grew up well off, felt sorry for those she saw as underprivileged ....but underneath all that was an ability to be very snotty about who she associated with, she was bigoted when someone didn’t agree with her, and she could be downright mean behind people’s back. Of course, she was a Democrat and she and I aren’t friends anymore.

The NYT refers to a “Black Panthers Murder Trial” so obliquely you might think it was a Black Panther who was murdered!

What a bunch of phoney garbage. Wonder how, with all her meditations on "Privilege" etc, Hilary found time to represent a phoney Savings and Loan, make a fortune with no money down on cattle futures, threaten Bill's bimbos, and become a nasty snob as those who worked with her universally observed her to be.

Alternate theory. Hilary is just a spoiled snotty little jackass without principles outside of those found in a marxist handout.

Obviously, her education is sorely lacking in substance. Hillary needs to go back to school. I could suggest a few locations: Inner City Detroit elementary school, an inner city LA middle school, and then a Jackson, MS high school. Then she could try a year or so of college at a place such as MS Valley State or Alcorn State. I don’t think that will be enough immersion for her, however.

[Mrs. Clinton recalled first being aware of racism a half-century ago, at age 10, when she saw the televised images of black students in Little Rock, Ark., being blocked from attending school by order of Gov. Orval E. Faubus.]

The rest of the story:

President Eisenhower’s reply to Faubus, a Democrat, was to send the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock and to seize control of the Arkansas National Guard. Faubus backed down. This was in 1957, more than three years before John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson took office.

Does this author have an original idea or thought?

Looks like every line is pulled straight out of Carl Bernstein's book.

"Palest of Chicago suburbs", what kind of crapola is this. And the NY Times made no mention of Hillary babysitting the children of migrant workers? This from CNN: " Appearing before a religious conference earlier this week, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-New York) told the audience that as a child attending Sunday school she would baby-sit the children of migrant workers so that their older siblings could join their parents at work."
