I don’t like John McCain’s position on the issues. However, I react very negatively to anyone who would disparage his patriotism. I don’t think the public will tolerate it either. I do not think it will reflect well on anyone who trys this tactic. McCain is revered as a heroe by many of the Viet Nam generation.

I do not, however, believe the same about Senator Kerry.

Most of us from the Viet Nam era have nothing good to say bout him.

You can strike that from your list.

Carry on...

You raise a good point, which we mulled over a bit over on Wheeler's site.

My sense is probably not going to be in the majority on this. Anyone who went through that kind of hell gets my respect, gratitude and kind consideration, pretty much regardless of what they did while there.

However ... I will hold someone responsible for what they say and do now, in regards to their past. If they lie now and claim heroism beyond what occurred, or deny and cover up more human responses which did occur, then that gives me reason to doubt their current integrity.

You may well be right that my view won't sell well with the public.

This compulsion many of us have (even I had, a couple paragraphs above ;) to always start critiques of McCain with a statement honoring his service and heroism is beginning to feel to me like a strange variant of Political Correctness.

In any case, I'm not voting on someone for a Medal, but for President.

Any attempt by anyone to downplay McCains experience in the Hilton would backfire in a massive way. The only chance Hillary has is to get John to blow up in public. If the Clintons use the tactics they have used on Obama on McCain they will lose in a landslide.

Many Republicans don't like McCain because he has stabbed them in the back but the truth is he is a moderate to Conservative Republican. He will get many crossover votes. He will get many male Democrats and probably many black Democrats who will be spurned by the eventual Hillary nomination. McCain is the kind of guy who can take New York and Connecticut and maybe even California in the general. I just hope he doesn't take Huck as his VP. My guess is Rudy.

I agree with you when you said:

The only thing I'd say is, "If true, (and I want to stess "IF") do people have a right to know about this?

And, it is so unnecessary. There is plenty, PLENTY of things you can list as to why you shouldn't vote for John McCain. Just in the last 7 years. You simply do not need to go to this type of negativity, and it will backfire, making him a more sympathetic figure.
