Huckabee Tackles Romney for Team McCain

On this Super Sunday, it's fitting I suppose that Mike Huckabee would be out there blocking and tackling for Team McCain. Appearing on this morning's Today show, the former Arkansas governor made a pro forma claim that he's still running for president and not the veep slot. But Huckabee certainly seemed to be acting as what Mark Steyn described in a recent Hugh Hewitt interview as McCain's "wing man."
Consider Huckabee's reply to a question from Sunday co-host Jenna Wolfe [a resident, coincidentally, of Chappaqua, NY, home to Bill and Hillary.]

Huck tackles Romney for Team McCain. Ping to Today show list.

It's an absurd premise considering poll after poll shows that Huckabee voters are more likely to vote for McCain than Romney.
But, how can Huckabee divide the conservative vote if he isn't a conservative?

Earth to Huckabee - McCain doesn't like you - you are too closely associated with evangelicals because you're a former preacher!
But, Huckabee didn't care if he destroyed the Arkansas GOP so he might as well destroy the national GOP!

JENNA WOLFE: Governor, Mitt Romney said that evangelicals who vote for you would basically be handing the party's nomination over to a very liberal John McCain. I see you're smiling there. What is your reaction to that?
MIKE HUCKABEE: Well I think he's got it just a little bit wrong. People who vote for Mitt Romney might be handing it over to John McCain. But let's be fair. John McCain is not a liberal. I think that's nonsense. One of the reasons Mitt Romney's campaign has not been able to get traction even though he spent $100 million is that statements like that are ludicrous. John McCain and I differ on immigration; we differ on stem-cell research; we differ on the human-life amendment. So there's some areas where we're different. But to call him a liberal is a pretty big stretch, especially from a guy who still believes in gun control, who's a recent convert to the pro-life movement, who still has a real problem figuring out where he stands on a host of issues. I just think that's ludicrous, and that's why we feel like we're going into this, if it is a two-man race, it's John McCain and Mike Huckabee.
Since Huckabee provided instances where he and McCain differ, he sure doesn't sound like a wing man.
Romney would like it to be so, if only to make up for his own shortcomings.

So conservatives oppose *changing* Roe v. Wade?
Was Reagan not a conservative when he wanted to *change* the
punitive income tax laws?
You don’t understand conservatism if you think conservatism is just about preserving the status quo.

But why was Huck so vehemently denouncing Mitt’s criticism of McCain?

Romney needs to quit throwing good money after bad and call it a campaign.

Romney is ahead by 3 points in CA. He’s behind only by 2 points in GA. Republicans are beginning to realize that McCain is not palatable as our candidate for numerous reasons, all which have been discussed many times on FR.
Romney is turning this thing around. The MSM are going to get a rude awakening.

But why was Huck so vehemently denouncing Mitts criticism of McCain? One of the following:
a. because Mitt hurt Mike's feelings
b. simple religious bigotry
c. he is in collusion with McCain
d. any combination of the above.

I honestly believe if the tables were reversed and it was McCain criticizing Romney by calling him a liberal, then Huckabee would defend Romney as well. McCain has criticized Romney and his differing positions depending on political expediency, and although I haven’t heard Huckabee speak on this, I agree with McCain on that one.
Here is what Huckabee said about McCain’s criticism of Romney and the subject of timetables:
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2008/01/27/huckabee_romney_backed_secret_timetable/2636/
If Huckabee can be proven untruthful, then I will agree that the accusation that Huckabee is carrying McCain’s water has merit.
