ACU's David Keene: Press Favors McCain
Newsmax ^ | Feb.3, 2008 | Ronald Kessler

Posted on 2/4/2008, 12:45:53 AM by JaneNC

John McCain is largely a creation of the media, David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.

“McCain has gotten a free ride from the media,” says Keene, who has endorsed Mitt Romney for president. “Indeed, he’s gotten better treatment than any GOP candidate I can remember.”

While tagging other candidates “flip-floppers,” Keene says “admiring reporters” ignore McCain’s flaws and the fact that he has “changed or obfuscated his position on more issues this cycle than any other candidate. And that’s saying something.”

... Keene says McCain routinely rewrites his own record, and his version is accepted by the media.

“Take the Bush tax cuts,” Keene says. “When he opposed them, it was not because, as he now claims, they weren’t coupled with needed spending cuts, but because he charged à la the Dems that they were tax cuts for the rich.”

McCain said then: “I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us at the expense of middle-class Americans who most need tax relief.”

“His rhetoric at the time had less to do with his claimed support for a smaller government than his apparent desire to out-demagogue Democrats in the Senate,” Keene says.

Keene says it’s premature to conclude that because McCain bested Romney in Florida, he has his party’s nomination wrapped up.

But, Keene says, “if it turns out he does, he is one candidate who will honestly be able to say he owes his victory to the New York Times and the Washington Post.”

McCain will not be targeted by the media until after he locks up the nomination.

Posting the obvious. McCain is winning only in states that allow cross over votes!

“In contrast to the glowing coverage of McCain and his Straight Talk Express, the media have largely ignored a telling clue to Romney’s character. As first fully reported by Newsmax, when told in July 1996 that the 14-year-old daughter of one of his partners at Bain Capital had been missing in New York for three days, Romney closed down the firm. He asked its 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to try to find her.

“I don’t care how long it takes, we’re going to find her,” Romney told the girl’s father Robert Gay.

As t turned out, the girl had gone to a rave party and taken ecstasy. As a result of a massive campaign orchestrated by Romney, he was able to locate and rescue the girl when she was within a day of dying from the effects of an overdose. “

Have you ever heard this in the media?
No.

Too bad the media hates Romney so much - if it were any other candidate, we’d never heard the end of it!

Anyway, I know Romney adores his family, and it sounds as if he values the members of his employee’s families as well. These are excellent leadership qualities.

McCain's strength in the general is a myth. If he was truly a formidable GOP candidate, the MSM would be attacking, not coddling him.

The MSM's benign treatment of McCain is what has lifted him to this lofty height.

The image “http://www.russwicks.com/images/wile_e_coyote.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

As McCain becomes the presumptive nominee, the MSM will turn on him. Having no support from the conservatives, there will be nothing to break his fall.

You are right. I don’t believe the media has been overly light on McCain though they did play a key role in his resurrection.
The candidates treated worst by the media were the conservatives, until Thompson got in the race he was an angel then they called him lazy and made a concerted effort to deflate him. We can also thank others in the conservative media who joined the enemy early on backing our own John Kerry(Mitt Romney) and Bill Clinton (Huckabee). Can we all say Jesus? Now we are left with the most conservative person in the room being John McCain. I know plenty hate him and it is justified but then they call Romney a conservative? His record and that of Huckabee are atrocious. Universal Health Care and the man of 1000 pardons?

Yes, he is a creation of MSM.

The libs and the indys might like him ...but they will also flock to Obama.

He never has had the base and he never will.

Ya’ think? The media hates conservatives. But they love “moderate” (i.e. Democrat) “Republicans”. Obama, McCain or Hitlery. It’s a win-win-win for them.

The press favors Hillary and Obama . The Mccain dance is about perceived fairness. If he gets the nomination they will turn on him like a pack of rabid dogs. Questions of age and health will be the only coverage he gets then.

And still...”John McCain is largely a creation of the media”

I don’t think people are buying it anymore though.

The lack of coverage of Mitt Romney is astounding.
He is smart and articulate...and would put Hillary or Obama to shame.
McCain can’t do that...he is feeble and one of them....

Romney has been endorsed by Santorum, the governor of Missouri, Denny Hastert and others. Have you seen that reported in the press? Nope. I heard one of the Fox babes comment about Romney, “He’s not getting the endorsements he needs.” Romney won Maine even though Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe endorsed McCain. The media is convinced Romney’s finished. They’re writing his obituary. I hope the voters prove the media wrong.

Let’s see those who endorse McCain, shall we? Norman Schwarzkopf for starters but here’s some more to whet your appetite:
http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/News/PressReleases/Read.aspx?guid=8313996a-5d94-4fd6-8cd4-43a9947afd28

Huckabee has the endorsement of Duncan Hunter who has served in South Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 during the Vietnam War in the Army Rangers’ 75th Ranger Regiment, attached to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He held the rank of First Lieutenant, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, and service ribbons such as the Vietnam Service Medal.

As for Romney? crickets...
