I had forgotten about that. This might have had something to do with it, plus the fact that opponents outspent proponents 4 to 1:

I don’t know what it is that you want me to prove. McCain was providing cover for some of the Republicans in his gang of fourteen, that were under pressure by the gay lobby to oppose the marriage ammendment. Chaffee is gone, now, but the gay lobby said that there was one more in the Senate. You can guess who that is.
I was terribly disheartened in 2006 when the required number of signatures was not achieved. Now, my faith is renewed.
