Republicans woo voters in Reagan country

"They seem to be settling on Romney," said Mark DiCamillo, the director of the well-regarded Field Poll, but they're not crazy about him.

Romney was registered "unenrolled," or unaffiliated with a political party, in the 1980s - and he reminded voters in his 1994 U.S. Senate campaign that "I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."

Romney voted in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary - so he could vote against Bill Clinton, he's explained - and supported abortion rights when he ran for the Senate and Massachusetts' governorship.

I hope Romney wins a big chunk of CA but I hope no one comes out on top on Super Tuesday.

Immigration is a huge issue for a lot of California Republican voters - they want something done about the influx from the nearby border, and fast - and McCain has teamed with Democrats and Bush to push a path to citizenship for many of the nation’s estimated 12 million undocumented aliens.

“The number one way Romney affects the debate here is with TV, and if he keeps saying John McCain’s granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, that’s a powerful message,” said Jon Fleischman, California’s Republican Party vice chairman.

For all the complaints about McCain not being much of a conservative I fail to see where Romney is much better.

McCain still doesn’t say he will make anyone leave, just that he will secure the borders first. That is not a mute point, as if he grants amnesty everyone in the world will keep on coming somehow. No matter how many times mccain says it was not amnesty it WAS!

"For all the complaints about McCain not being much of a conservative I fail to see where Romney is much better."

Romney has repackaged himself in the last few months as a hard as nails pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-borders Reagan social and fiscal conservative and foreign policy/military war hawk & genius. And, modestly, he's given his Scout's honor that it's all absolutely true.

Oh, and all that other stuff in his record?

Not his fault. The liberals made him do it. ®

I’ve emailed the Romney campaign and have suggested he do as Fred T. did and come out with an Immigration Statement that is IDENTICAL to Fred’s. He just doesn’t want to take it to the next level, saying that “As President, all illegal aliens in the U.S. will have to go home”. He wants to leave the door open, and after the Invasion of 30-40 million, you HAVE to shut the door!!

You’d better get your “numbers” up to date, americanophile! It’s 20-38 million or more by the recent CAPS Study at

http://www.capsweb.org/content.php?id=242&menu_id=8

With illegal aliens continuing to invade at the rate of 5,000 to 10,000 per day along our long Southern Border, the number is even likely to be higher—over 40 million.

Important Endorsement for Romney - Michael Cutler

Why I believe Governor Mitt Romney is best on the immigration issue.

By Michael Cutler 2/2/08 MCutler007@aol.com

The presidential campaign is grinding on and this Tuesday is so-called “Super Tuesday.” I have had the opportunity to consider the positions that have ben taken by the candidates for the Presidency especially where the critical issue of immigration is concerned and have come to the conclusion that the only real choice is Mitt Romney.[snip]

AuntB-

Thanks. I was getting spammed by Mike to the point where I had to ask him to stop. A great guy, though. He’s a Dem, you know, but knows what’s really going on along the Border which is pretty awful stuff. I think Mike Cutler is teriff!

As good as Mike Cutler’s endorsement is to folks who know who he is (not many outside of the anti-Invasion circles do, unfortunately), Roy Beck’s endorsement and “call to arms” (a la Senate Amnesty warning last Spring) to vote for Mitt was the whopper!

Phony conversion or not, I still have an idea of who John McCain is and what makes him tick. Who is Romney? What are his core beliefs? Does he have any? I don’t know. I still think we should support him because it may result in a deadlocked convention where someone better can emerge.

Correction - I meant "Phony conversion or not, I still have an idea of who MITT ROMNEY is and what makes him tick." Was he a conservative pretending to be a liberal to win in MA? Or is he now a liberal pretending to be a conservative to win the nomination?
