Is Romney's Healthcare Plan Conservative?
http://www.humanevents.com ^ | Posted: 12/27/2007 | Merrill Matthews

Posted on 02/03/2008 10:53:04 PM PST by Maelstorm

On Sunday, December 16, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romny told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Tim Russert, “The plan we put together in Massachusetts I think is working in Massachusetts.…I happen to like what we did. I think it’s a good model for other states.” Merrill Matthews here offers a different view.

Romneycare is a horrible idea. It places Republicans on parity with Hillary Clinton. Are we going to further cede ground to the left and accept their arguments? We won this debate before why in the hell our we considering voting for someone who is waving the white flag? Didn't we see what George Bush's Prescription drug benefit did to further the conservative cause?

If Romney does try to push a flawed health care system through, we'll just have to raise holy hell and force him to back off.

Of course nobody knows exactly how he'll respond to having his feet held to the fire by the grass-roots but we do know McCain will feel no compuction about kicking us in the groin and poking us in the eye.

Like I said, I could be wrong but I think our chances of having our voices heard stands a better chance with Romney.

His explanation was that people who could afford coverage were blowing it off and going and getting care that would wind up being free. Since cutting off free health care would never fly the plan was to force people to pony up.

God forbid anyone in Massachusetts should have to pay their own tab....

Hillary has announced that she now wants to garnish wages for forced coverage, just like Romney did in 2005. That must make her a conservative in the eyes of Romney supporters.

I’m not all for Romneycare, but it is better than Hillerycare! I think this is an issue that will die in the congress. There is only one ray of hope I have with Romney and his health care plans, he is willing to try and find free market solutions and not socialized medicine solutions.

Of course, Mass-Care is a horrible idea with a worse implementation. And it will be seen for what it is before this election cycle is over.

The difference between Romney and McCain is that Romney will acknowledge that “there are problems with the system, and that it’s not suitable for one-size-fits-all National Healthcare but will serve as a learning experience to the states who want to implement something like this”.

McCain, on the other hand will say that the “system worked, and if it didn’t than it’s only because it didn’t have the time or enough money to work, and we have to make sure that with some minor tweaks to the system it’s implemented on a national level before it’s too late for people who are dying or go bankrupt due to lack of medical insurance”.

I really don’t know how much this will “play” in Tuesday’s vote. Mitt made it work while he was in office in MA. But a Lefty governor came in and messed up the works, including ending Mitt’s tough on illegals efforts. He certainly can’t be blamed for that. Americans will usually give a pol the benefit of the doubt...

Any government-subsidized, “universal” health care is a poor, and likely dangerous, idea. I think in the long run it will do more damage to the economy and society than, for example, amnesty for illegals.

The smaller the scale (global > federal > state > local > corporate > individual/family), the more voluntary, and thus less socialistic. So long as these social experiments remain confined to the state or lower scales, IMO, there is sufficient selective pressure (movement of capital and people in response to poor policy) to shield liberty.

As far as the president is concerned, it comes down to his view of federalism. Is there any sign that Romney endorses the notion that the FEDERAL government should play any role (let alone an expanded role) in the delivery, funding, or regulation of health services? If the scope of Romney's health-care stupidity is limited to state-wide application, then I can overlook it. Stupid ideas or not, such powers are reserved for the states (or, more accurately, are not related to those expressly enumerated functions of the fedgov), to be freely voted upon by people within the state, and limited in scope to those within the state only. Nationalization is the cancer we cannot easily escape.

[“than” should be “then”.]

One additional thought... If Romneycare will be used against him in general election by Democrats, he will not be too proud and ego-maniacal to unconditionally defend it - he’ll admit that it has “a lot of problems, especially if administered by big government bureaucracy” and this will not be damaging to Romney’s candidacy (might even enhance it, admitting that he may have made a mistake as a Governor of very liberal state hellbent on “universal care”) - but this will only seriously damage or kill the idea of National Healthcare idea, nip it in the bud as well as do damage to Democrat candidate running on that platform.

This could be a win-win for Romney and conservatives in general election. I can’t imagine McCain copping to anything wrong in his long government career.

You’ve GOT to be kidding, Rudder! I highly doubt that Romney’s form of quasi-Socialized health care (not that I favor it—I don’t)

-Changes our culture from English to Spanish without assimilation

Anyway, you want proof? Here are some stats to mull over while hundreds of illegal Mexicans pour across our Southern Border tonight:

“After reading these statistics, I could cry. We have an invasion and no one seems to care. Worse, the “McKennedy” Bill (McCain and Kennedy) would give legal status to these law breakers. If we want to control murder, rape and vicious crimes, we may not need Three Strikes, what we need is to find and deport the criminals who are here as illegal aliens. The FBI already has a list of sexual predators here illegally. In May they, along with the Salinas, California police picked up 40 of them. Why not pick up the thousands of sexual predators that the FBI know are here in this county illegally?

Now is the time for crime groups, police and law enforcement groups to stop playing politics, stop endorsing candidates, and to start enforcing the law. Our public officials must act now, the citizens of Simi Valley, Ventura County, of California and of the nation are not safe. Read this FBI/ statistics and weep for the victims of our government not enforcing the laws.”

These statistics were published at www.polipundit.com

Write your thoughts directly on the web site for all to see and discuss. Pass this along to your friends, family and especially to law enforcement and elected officials. Ask them why they are not doing more to protect our community from the criminal element of the illegal aliens. Steve Frank

Be careful using the phrase 'holy hell' the MittWitts will call you a bigot. They will also call you a bigot when you oppose RomneyCare and $50 government subsidized abortions.

I haven’t had health insurance for many years and no has paid my tab. I’ve paid for everything myself. Obama’s health plan at least gives you the ability to opt out.

"Conservative" was not what FReepers were calling Romney in 2005.

Give it time: rationed care, denial of service for chronically ill, elderly, life-style/diet issues, unlimited abortion,...these things are already occurring in other countries.

You don’t live in Mass.

Why did you feel the need to chime in then?

Err... I live in the USA. Romney is trying to become my president and I don't want his socialized health care. Even if he doesn't win, Mass is asking for a federal bailout for their failing socialized health care and I might end up having to pay for Romney's screwups.

Yup, HillaryCare is every bit as conservative RomneyCare. LOL. Both are liberal/socialist as all get out.

Here's what Ronald Reagan said about this kind of stuff:

"In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?"
