Barring a huge surprise on Super Tuesday, which occurs the day after this writing, Sen. John McCain will have all but wrapped up the Republican presidential nomination. For a great many conservatives, present company very much included, this is our worst nightmare come true: A phony choice between liberal and even more liberal, between socialism and communism.
How did we come to such an awful place? The answer is fairly simple. If I may paraphrase former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, you run for a party nomination with the candidates you have, not the ones you wish you had. In other words, there never was a viable conservative in the race in the first place. The closest hope we creatures of the right had was Fred Thompson, and for several reasons the other candidates' insanely early entry into the race, Fred's rightful disdain of a thoroughly screwed-up process, and his total marginalization by the drive-by media he never caught fire.

Astute observation. Agreed.
Pray for a Romney/Thompson ticket versus Hillary.
Anything else will doom us to an Obama islamo-marxist-populist “presidency”. Be afraid.
Why do Republicans even pay attention to the drive-bys? The latter are enemy forces. As much as anything, the outcome of this election should serve to discredit the media to any remaining Republicans who still read it. Does Exxon read what GreenPeace publishes? Do Catholics read what NARAL publishes? Do blacks read what the KKK publishes? Why do Republicans read what the MSM publishes?! Why does the MSM have any sway whatsoever with them?
Fred didn’t have the fire in the belly he needed. He could have swept all those problems aside with such hard work that the media had to take notice of it. Instead he played right into the caricture the media created of him . . .
I fear greatly for my country. There is no candidate worthy enough to lead my beloved America. America has been sold down the river by many of the very people she blessed with her beneficence. The closest comparison I can think of is that America is like the loving and self-sacrificing parent whose miscreant and ungrateful offspring only call or visit when they want something.
On the other hand, John McCain has spent more of his career inside government than outside, and the reasons not to vote for him as the Republican nominee are very compelling.
He voted against letting people keep more of their money in 2001 and 2003 when President Bush pushed through his tax cuts. He has been part of the escalation of the federal debt during his 20-plus years in the U.S. Senate. He showed questionable leadership on a failed immigration bill that was rejected by the public. And he showed no leadership by failing to support the presidents efforts to establish personal retirement accounts a proposal that would have started to fix the coming financial train wreck in the Social Security system.
Thats not leadership.

This almost feels like the Terminator movies Judgment Day is coming soon, and on November 4, 2008, SkyNet will become self-aware, the political machine (which, ironically, includes Arnold Schwarzenegger himself) firing nuclear missiles upon its enemy, the people. And right now, there is no John Connor to lead the resistance.
